Sex Offender Faces Child Pornography Charge in Yorktown

Jonathan DeLaura is accused of being in possession of child pornographic material.

A convicted sex offender, who was , faces a new charge for child pornography, Yorktown police said.

Jonathan L. DeLaura, 37, was charged with possessing a sexual performance by a child, a felony. The arrest stems from an investigation in conjunction with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

As part of the investigation, on Feb. 8 at 4:20 p.m., members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and the executed a search warrant at the man's Jefferson Valley residence where they seized an electronic device containing child pornographic material. Police said they later revealed DeLaura owned the device.

Yorktown Detective George Davis stopped the defendant on Croton Falls Road in Mahopac on Feb. 24 and took him into custody.

DeLaura was sent to the Westchester County Jail without bail and was scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 28. According to a clerk at the , the man's case was continued to March 13.

His Putnam County charges include allegations that he was meeting underage boys through social networking chat rooms, soliciting explicit photographs, and recently engaging in sexual activity with an underage boy.

Sheriffs arrested DeLaura on Feb. 3 in a business parking lot in the town of Putnam Valley during a sting operation when DeLaura thought he was going to meet a boy to engage in sexual conduct with him, according to officials.

He was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, felonies, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors.

Investigators said the man would typically pose as a 17-year-old female in order to meet young boys. Once he gained their trust and engaged them in explicit sexual conversations, he would also request them to send him explicit photographs of themselves. He would then attempt to meet them at an arranged location to engage in sex acts with them.

If a recipient declined to meet him or after meeting him, police allege, DeLaura would use the sexual conversations and photos to prevent victims from calling police. He warned his victims that if they did, he would expose the photos and sexual conversations to their friends, coaches and other people.

Putnam County investigators are hoping to speak with anyone who has had contact with him. They said DeLaura would use the computer screen names "Sillyrabbit," "Damastrmynd" and "Riddlerboy."

DeLaura is a Level 1 sex offender due to a 2009 conviction of sexual misconduct in a case involving a 12-year-old boy.

Anyone having had contact with the Internet screen names used by DeLaura in a social networking chat site or who were victimized by him are encouraged to call investigators at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 225-8060. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.

A predator, a pedophile and a Level One Sex Offender, yet, he's still on the street. Lock him up, castrate him chemically or physically and never let him see the light of day again. Truth is society can't control him when he's outside, so he needs to be in prison or a mental institution for the criminally insane and he needs to stay there until he dies.

I just have one little problem with the YPD website. (I do not condone anything that is alleged, or that has happened previously that I have read in this article, just to put that right up front.) If you hit the link in the article in the second to last paragraph (DeLaura) which you will find states he is level one offender, and then click on that same YPD page on S*x Offenders link at the left side of the page, it then clearly states in bold letters that YPD does not disseminate information on level one offenders. This seems to be quite a discrepancy! Or, has the policy changed and the web page has not been updated yet? There is only one other offender name listed on YPD, and without any further information. So I suppose he is also a level one who shouldn't be listed anyways. If DeLaura is actually convicted of this, this should come to prove that the reports on same-gender (specifically male on male, for example, some Catholic Clergy etc.) offenders need much more rehabilitation than is currently applied. All reports seem to agree that opposite gendered offender from their victim are the least likely to reoffend. Fix the laws to protect the public properly. What I am trying to do here is to let the public know that not all offenders are the same. Just as no two people are the same. Those who prey on children aren't the same type offender as those with "statutory" types of crimes, legal in some states, & not legal in others. These are Level one type offenders.

okay I havent seen the actual site u speak of here the article I read true shows his past rude unforgivable and obviously though level one untreateable choice to prey on children. What I took from this is the picture shows the piece of sh** just arrested and is asking anyone who knows of this bast@#$# ds action currently to come forward ..hello...and yes you make a good point the public should be protected properly and thats what this sting was marching to the beat of ,as they should. I dont believe there is anyone in law enforcement who would say they are given enough leway in the law to keep them permenatley away from our children.... sometimes people are screaming out for help ???? HELLO there are plenty of doors to walk thru before choosing to scare a child for life NO EXCUSEs personally do away with the levels and show them all they have to many rights keep them away from our kids and help the law enforcment community do what they know should be done and cant...I do however feel for the legal age person who is dupted by a mature age minor....thats not a choice its a con.....just saying. Thank you YPD and all other agencies great job show his face more !!!! spelling yeah I know and no not typos wheres the spell check...
