Police Say Cortlandt Man Stole Catalytic Converters

State police have arrested a Cortlandt man accused of cutting catalytic converters from two rental trucks and selling them for scrap.

And they're looking for more on Michael Schmidt of 21 Maple Row.

"Anyone with information regarding the criminal activities of Michael Schmidt are urged to contact the NYSP at 914-737-7171.  All calls will be kept confidential," police said.

Police were called May 27 by the U-Haul dealership at 3144 East Main St. in Cortlandt, reporting that two catalytic converters were cut from the undercarriage of two U-Haul trucks that were parked behind their business.

A lengthy investigation conducted by NYSP Cortlandt Troopers and BCI Investigators resulted in Schmidt's arrest, police said. The investigation determined that Schmidt knowingly sold the two stolen catalytic converters, valued at over $4000, to a scrap yard for cash.

During the investigation, police said they found that Schmidt knowingly violated a valid Order Of Protection issued by the Town of Cortlandt Justice Court that prohibited him from being in the company of a specific female acquaintance.

He was charged with Criminal Possession Of Stolen Property-3rd and Criminal Contempt-1st, arraigned in the Town Court by Justice Gerald Klein and sent to the Westchester County Jail on $15,000 cash bail. His reappearance date for court was set for the Village of Elmsford on July 30.
