Motorcycle Crash Leaves Putnam Valley Man with Head Trauma

Two Putnam Valley residents were injured—one sustained head trauma and internal injuries, and the other multiple fractures—in an accident in Putnam Valley Sunday night.

State troopers from the Cortlandt and Wappingers barracks responded to the accident, which occurred on Oscawana Lake Road, south of Sawmill Road, at about 7:10 p.m.

"Initial investigation indicated that Gregory M. Matero, age 25 from Putnam Valley, was operating his 2009 Yamaha motorcycle on a blind curve in the road when he encountered a pedestrian in the road," authorities said in a statement. "He applied the motorcycle's brakes and lost control of the motorcycle.  The motorcycle struck another Putnam Valley resident, 56-year-old Kathleen M. Duncan, then hit a guide rail on the side of the road. Matero was ejected from the motorcycle during the crash."

Matero was transported by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with head trauma and internal injuries. He was initially listed in critical condition. Duncan sustained "multiple fractures" and was taken by ambulance to Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt Manor.

Officials closed part of the roadway for about three hours. Members of the Putnam Valley Fire Department responded, as did members of a state police collision reconstruction team.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.
