Peekskill Police Chief: New Officer Is a 'Valuable' Community Member

The City of Peekskill Police Department's newest officer, Kevin Ward Jr., is a lifelong resident who has spent years serving and volunteering with community organizations, officials say.

Ward was sworn in Monday before the Common Council. He's replacing an officer who retired in June.

A graduate of Peekskill High School's class of 2003, he's volunteered with the Peekskill Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Peekskill Police Auxiliary Force. He's also been a member of the Westchester County Public Safety Emergency Force for the past six years.

“Kevin has proven to be a valuable member of this community as evident by his volunteer work, and we are excited to have him join our department where he will continue protecting the City of Peekskill for many years to come” Police Chief Eric Johansen said in a statement.

Ward started basic police officer training Monday morning at the Westchester County Police Academy. His assignment there will last 20 weeks. After he graduates he'll spend several months in the Peekskill Police Department field training program, according to officials.
