Peekskill Officials, Police Agree on Deal

The Common Council is moving to finalize a deal with the Peekskill Police Benevolent Association for 2011 and 2012. Both sides must still a negotiate a contract for next year.

Peekskill officials and police union officials have finally come to terms on a new contract.

Unfortunately, the agreement is only for 2011 and 2012 and the process will start all over again in 2013.

On Monday, the Peekskill Common Council approved a resolution authorizing acting City Manager Brian Havranek to finalize an agreement that the city reached with the police union on Nov. 25.

The agreement amends police salary increases to two percent in 2011 and 2012.  Officers will also be required to pay 11 percent of the health insurance costs they select and will now be able to scan in to work one block of four hours at a time.

The last police contract expired in 2010.

“We’re pleased to have settled this contract with the police,” Peekskill Mayor Mary Foster said Monday. “It does bring us current and the new contract negotiations begin immediately next month. In these really difficult times, with the tax cap, 2 percent salary increases do not anticipate the amount of increases we have to deal with...I know as we move forward contract negotiations will continue to be prolonged, but we are very supportive of our police department. We think they do a great job and I know everybody will work hard to make sure we have a fair contract for 2013 and 2014."

A copy of the resolution is available in the PDF attached to this story.

A quick overview of the contract but seems fair..2% is in line with standards (thats all I got!)...paying into health funds are a norm...and 11% is reasonable.
They do a great job and truly appreciate their work.

now just stop the crazy OT in the last year of an indivudual policeperson and maybe the pension costs will start to get in line.

Good job to our police department on a good job that you do. And good job to the common counsel for keeping costs from getting to high.

Anyone interested in finding out which member of the Peekskill Common Council has still not paid their bills to get elected? Just doesn't seem right......making decisions for an entire community and stiffing local business people.

We need the police a lot more than an assistant to the assistant.

I also believe that the contract is reasonable and that the Peekskill Police truly have been doing an outstanding job keeping Peekskill as safe as possible in these turbulent times that have nearby towns becoming drug/gang war zones. Their job is only going to become more difficult and dangerous as every community addresses the daunting and ominous task of surviving the epidemic of dismal fiscal states. Wishing the best for Peekskill's recently retired police chief Tumolo, and am also ecstatic to see Lt. Eric Johansen get the well deserved opportunity of being "acting" chief. Eric, born and raised here in Peekskill, is an exceptionally hard working officer and has been his entire career. He genuinely loves his hometown and will face whatever he needs to in the hopes the city can return to the warm community it once was ... safe ... and loaded with local business. It would be an absolute travesty if the new resolution recently passed that makes being a current resident an absolute requirement for one to be appointed fulltime chief, results in preventing the most qualified officer in Lt. Johansen from being appointed. Nothing less than local outrage would be expected and justified.

By the way, in our new system we have an update that includes a community moderation tool—it'sRead More not only Patch editors who can flag comments. What is it? Readers can flag any content they find objectionable on any Patch site at any time. We’ve put the flagging link in more places to make it easier to find and backed it with more sophisticated tools. Our goal is to recognize and reward readers who make our community great. How does it work? You’ll see these words — Flag as Inappropriate — on the top and bottom of Board posts, articles, blogs and notes, and next to every single comment anywhere on the site. To flag something, you simply click those words. What happens when you flag? It alerts us that something might be up with the content. When should you flag? We ask that you use your common sense and a general spirit of openness. You should never flag things that you simply disagree with and certainly not to clarify minor points. We encourage you to comment, post (or even start your own blog) to be heard on those things. You can review the Patch Terms of Use Ashley referred to above.

I'm wondering if a comment made by Veton Sejdiu was deleted because it implies a threat againstRead More people. In his comment, he calls people "morons" and "fools" (nothing new here), but in a threatening way, he dares people to try to take guns away.

Unleashed dogs is getting to be a big problem in Peekskill. I see them routinely now. People areRead More letting their pit bulls out, their poodles, their chihuahuas - all kinds of dogs. Two days a go I watched a lady jogging on the track with her loose dog. The dog wasn't even supposed to be on the track no less loose. Some kid or elderly lady is going to get bit. Loose dogs also end up in more fights with other dogs.

Sue a sad fact that these days of “political correctness” individuals who exhibit rudeRead More and ignorant behavior are empowered by the rest of us. I know of a similar situation where the individuals will yell four letter words in the public areas with young children there, call others the foulest things, and in this case, they are black and gay so the race/gay card is used constantly. Until people make it known they are not going to tolerate their behavior it will not stop. Have you notified the property owner, complex board, and police, or maybe the board of health?

It seems Patch moves editors every year. Liz was here when I signed up. Then she was shortly movedRead More to Rye and Rasheed took over. He must have been here about a year and then he left when the new format was introduced. Both times patch started cooking and then it got cut down just as new staff got their mojo going. A new editor with a new format seems like starting from scratch again. I know AOL/Patch needs to get some cash flow going quick (from what I've read) but I can't see what they are trying to do exactly by tipping the cart over and over

Working Families Party endorsed candidate Mary Foster
Robin Seggs June 14, 2013 at 10:44 am
Working Families Party almost always cross endorses with Democrats. Looks like the choice isRead More getting clearer: One team is Democrat, WFP and Independent and the Catalina Team is Republican, Right-to-life, Conservative. Anyway, I believe Catalina is campaigning as anti-gay rights, so I know how I will be voting.
jo June 14, 2013 at 02:28 pm
and so many in the cast of characters that attend the meetings. believe Mary is a republican atRead More heart.. and here the Left of all left dem groups endorses here..mmmmmmmm just thinking out loud..
