Yorktown Crash Victim Remembered as 'Genuine, Caring, Fun-Loving'

Randy Zapakin was walking his dog when he was struck by a car Thursday evening.

The Yorktown community is mourning the death of 57-year-old Randy Zapakin, who died Thursday night when he was struck by a car on Farm Walk Road.

Zapakin was walking his dog on Nov. 8 at 8:15 p.m. when a car driven by an 18-year-old Yorktown resident hit him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Yorktown paramedics.

The police department's Accident Investigation Team and its Detective Division are investigating the accident.

Police said the vehicle that struck Zapakin was a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was traveling north on Farm Walk Road and ultimately came to a rest on a neighbor's lawn.

No charges have been filed against the driver, whose name police did not release. The decision whether or not to file charges will be a collaborative effort between the Yorktown Police Department and the District Attorney's office, Lt. Robert Noble told Patch.

Zapakin worked as a real estate agent at Keller Williams Realty at Old Tomahawk Street in Yorktown. He also volunteered at the town's Relay for Life cancer research fundraiser, served as the Master of Ceremonies and was instrumental in the 'Dancing with the Yorktown Stars' fundraiser.

His wife, Debbie Zapakin, is co-owner along with friend Lori Weil of Wishes Boutique, located on Commerce Street in Yorktown. Through her business, she would donate a portion of all sales to the American Cancer Society to highlight the Relay for Life of Yorktown.

"So, so sad, "Lori Bregman Wilsea wrote on the Yorktown-Somers Patch Facebook page. "My heart is broken for this family."

Funeral service for Randy Zapakin is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Congregation Sons of Israel (CSI), 1666 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510. Burial will be at Sharon Gardens in Valhalla.

I walk my dog at night and now this gives me a sense of fear that someone can actually kill you with their car. I know cars are moving faster than they should in residential areas where people, dogs, and children walk and play. PLEASE SLOW DOWN! We don't want anymore families to have this type of tradegy. My prayers go to the family - all he was doing was walking his dog.

This is so sad! I only met Randy a few times - living in his parents building for many years. One thing was certain I knew he was a wonderful son! Thoughts and condolences to the whole Zapakin family!

I met Randy only a few times as a real estate client and just found out about this terrible news today. I am terribly sorry to hear of Randy's passing. As mentioned by many, Randy had such a friendly, endearing personality. My wife and I are both shocked and saddened to hear of this news. My condolences to his family who he spoke about to us in the highest regard.

I think that to treat this MAN (not kid) as a victim is unfair to the man who was killed while walking his dog, as well as to the children he left without a father. Your defense of him leads me to believe that you know this person, and he's probably someone you love. That being the case, you should ask yourself if you would rather visit his jail cell or his grave site. I know 4 people named Zapakin who could answer that for you. Actions have consequences; and when you play fast and loose with peoples lives for SPORT, it's unreasonable to expect people not to want justice. My name is Amanda Harrison, by the way. I've known Randy since I was a baby. He would have been at my wedding in August. I miss him.
