'Micro Earthquake' Hits Hudson Valley Near Peekskill

The quake was measured at a 2.5 magnitude.

A magnitude 2.5 "micro earthquake" was reported Saturday morning in Hudson Valley not far from Peekskill, according to The Journal News.

Residents in the area felt and heard the event, though no injuries were reported.

WPIX-TV reports the quake was about 5.2 miles from Peekskill, and it occurred at 10:46 a.m.

News of the earthquake drew concern from Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner who renewed his call to close the nearby Indian Point nuclear power plant.

"I have felt for a long time that Indian Point should close down," Feiner wrote on Patch Saturday. "And, I hope that the NRC will take into consideration the reality that this plant is located on active earthquake faults."

In 2011, the facility was ranked as having a high earthquake risk, based on data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
