Good Police Work and Blue Sneakers Lead to Arrest of Wanted Burglar

Thanks to good police work and a pair of vivid sneakers an off-duty Ossining officer commuting to work by train noticed, and coordinated the arrest of, a man on the "Most Wanted" list for felony burglary charges in New York.

Officer Joe Bracero was commuting to work on the Hudson line Metro-North train going south toward Croton-Harmon around 10 p.m. on Dec. 12 when he recognized the man from his "most wanted" police description out of Binghamton, NY, right down to his sneakers, said Lt. William Sullivan. "It was the light blue sneakers that drew his attention."

"It was a great job by Officer Bracero," Sullivan said.

Bracero called into headquarters to check this man against the official profile.

Timothy Bryant, 22, of Warburton Avenue, of Yonkers was wanted on several second degree burglary charges in Binghamton, Broome County, which lies near the border of Pennsylvania. He was being investigated on several more burglaries there and "suspected with some burglaries here in the last few months" as well, Sullivan said.

Binghamton news outlets report he had been caught in a home in July with a jewelry box and had allegedly stolen a bicycle from a garage the day before.

More officers planned to meet the suspect and the off-duty Bracero at the Croton-Harmon train station as they thought Bryant would be getting off the train there. But he didn't, so officers met him at the Ossining stop instead.

There through a smooth coordinated effort, officers were able to make a peaceful arrest on the platform, Sullivan said.

Bryant was taken to Broome County Jail where he is being held without bail, Sullivan said.
