A city sanitation worker fell off the back of a garbage truck and suffered serious head injuries on N. Division Street at 10:10 a.m., police said. The worker, who police would not identify at this time, was transported to the Westchester Medical Center.
Police do not believe that speed or traffic violations were involved in the incident. “We don’t know if the truck was moving at the time. It may have just started moving from a traffic light when it happened, but we are still investigating,” Lieutenant Eric Johansen said.
There were two other city workers in the truck at the time, a driver and passenger, police said.
About a dozen people from businesses on the 10 block of N. Division Street where the accident happened came out to help the man as soon as they saw him fall, said Marlene Ball, the owner of S-Cort Reality Inc. at 44 N. Division Street.
Several people helped immediately. “Frank Puglisi held his head the whole time,” Ball said.
Peekskill EMS, Fire and police responded.
N. Division Street was closed from about 10:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. while police conducted an accident reconstruction.
