Buchanan Police Identify Bike Thief

A 14-year-old from Peekskill is responsible for two bicycle thefts in the area, officials say.

"After seeing the video on Facebook and News 12 of the juvenile stealing a bicycle in Montrose, off-duty Buchanan Police Sergeant Michael Guida notified Buchanan Police Officer Thomas Cobelli of the incident," authorities said in a statement Tuesday, "since officer Cobelli had just taken a report of a stolen bike in Buchanan. He had also previously assisted State Police in a previous bicycle larceny."

Cobelli's investigation led him to locate the bike stolen from the Montrose home—surveillance video was live on News 12 Monday—in addition to the bike stolen from Buchanan. He also identified the juvenile on the video as a 14-year-old from Peekskill.

Investigation is continuing and charges are expected soon, officials said. Buchanan authorities are turning over their information to the State Police.
