The Truth About Voter ID Laws

Voter suppression is alive and well in 2012.

The New York Times explored the so-called issue of 'voter fraud' in their recent article, Looking, Very Closely, for Voter Fraud.

The exploration of this phenomenon illustrates that the forces of the right are determined to limit and suppress voter turnout all under the guise of voter fraud.

Despite all of the spin that has been pushed by Republican-controlled legislatures throughout the country, the number of confirmed cases of voter fraud, across the nation, can practically be counted on two hands. Despite the reality of this fact, there has been a strategic, concerted effort, on the part of Tea Party affiliated organizations, financed by right-wing mega donors like the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity, to suppress turnout from traditionally marginalized groups, like the poor, minorities, and seniors, in order to impact the outcome of elections, particularly this year's presidential race.

More people in America have been disenfranchised in a zealous effort to root out so-called 'voter fraud' than evidence shows have ever committed actual voter fraud. It is important we know the facts about voter fraud and we protect the rights of all Americans to have access to the ballot box. We fought too long and too hard over many decades to increase access to the voting booth, for the poor, for women and for minorities to allow this kind of systemic and partisan effort to go unchallenged.

The more we know, the more we can fight back.

Remember, in New York State, there are currently NO voter ID laws. On Election Day, no one can tell YOU that YOU cannot VOTE, in New York State, if you do not have identification.
