Meet the Peekskill Board of Education Candidate: Douglas Glickert

The following was submitted to the Peekskill City School District by Board of Education Candidate Douglas Glickert. To read all of our candidates' biographies, click here.

I have lived in Peekskill for the past 14 years and have raised my four children in the public school system. My two sons are now in college and I have one daughter in the high school and one in the middle school. I have been serving this city in a variety of capacities - all in the interest of our kids. I directed an organization called Learning Partners for seven years. We ran a computerized learning center after school and summer camp during July and August. I led a youth group called Lifeskills on Saturday nights in Depew Park for seven years after that. I have also volunteered as a coach and board member with our Lapola Little League as well as served on the Peekskill Youth Bureau Board. My career as an elementary school teacher in the Bronx is pushing 15 years. This has been my sixth year on the school board and my first as president. It is a joy and honor to serve these students and the community as a whole. It is challenging work but I believe in our district and the goals we have set as a board. I have worked with our team to do everything we could to improve student achievement in measurable ways and help the community fully comprehend how the common core can be an asset and not a liability. As an elected official, my efforts are to listen to the public, study data, and put in place best practices to ensure every student leaves our school well-prepared for the next stage in life. We have made great changes in leadership, curriculum, and policies. Change requires sound leadership and I have tried my best to provide that. It begins at the top and we are striving to transform this district into a high achieving one that we all can be proud of as well as our surrounding communities. Improving schools is a long term strenuous process and that is why I want to continue to work hard and see us meet our improvement goals. I am positive and optimistic about our future and welcome your thoughts and concerns at any time.
