Merry, Happy Politically Correct Holiday Season

With the December Holidays approaching people begin thinking about the right way (if any) to greet each other and share their holiday (or lack of) spirit.

Let me begin by apologizing because I know someone is going to be offended by this article.  Now that I have that out of the way, when did we become anti “other people’s” holidays?  It seems to me that instead of embracing our differences and celebrating we are taking everything away or turning it into something ridiculous in the name of trying to be all inclusive.

For example, when did a Christmas tree become a Holiday tree?  Trying not to offend people has become a huge issue in public schools, towns and workplaces.  Are we getting carried away here?

Jeff Goodwin, co-owner of catering company, Wm. Nicholas & Co. in Katonah (www.wmnicholas.com) recently shared with me an incident that happened to him.  One year Easter and Passover fell on the same weekend. Thinking he was doing something “green” he printed the Easter menu on one side of a page and the Passover menu on the other. One of his customers made it a point of telling him she was highly insulted. She said, “That holiday has nothing to do with my holiday.” Come on, can’t we all just get along?

Nonetheless, we must be cognizant of the fact that there is sensitivity around this issue and thus conduct ourselves accordingly especially in the business environment.

I consulted corporate etiquette expert Laura Katen, President of Katen Consulting, (www.katenconsulting.com) to get out some general guidelines for business holiday conduct.  Below are some of Katen’s essential tips when it comes to the topic of being PC in the workplace:

1) Be aware of a colleague's spiritual affiliation or level of religiousness - never just assume.

2) Don't emphasize one holiday over another (decorations, food, etc around the office should be general not specific to one holiday).

3) Always err on the side of generality if you want to make conversation but are afraid to offend. Say "happy holidays" as opposed to wishing him/her a specific holiday.

4) In life, but especially in business, it takes 7 seconds or less to make a first impression. It takes 8 positive encounters with the same person to reverse a negative impression. It is very easy to make a negative impression during the holidays, especially when alcohol is free flowing at celebrations. Limit alcohol consumption and remember you are not there for the free food and booze; you're there to be seen, meet, and mingle and represent yourself/your clients/ your company).

What happens if you wish someone Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays and you realize the person is an atheist?  Katen says, “Just let it go. No need to apologize or draw attention to it, after all your intentions were heartfelt.”

If you and your family will be celebrating a holiday this coming month I hope it is joyful. If you are not, I still wish you joy; there is not enough of that going around.

FOR ONE: he (and Billary) is supporting/pushing the UN Small Arms Treaty which would completely vitiate the 2nd Amendment; FOR TWO: he is supporting the UN OIC declarations in the Human Rights Committee which would ban blasphemy/attacks on Islam - a complete annihilation of OUR 1st Amendment rights. FOR THREE: he and Felony Murderer Holder have their own Watergate called FAST AND FURIOUS or GUNWALKER - another attempt to kill off the Citizen's rights under the 2nd Amendment; FOR FOUR: the man handed Iran a Christmas present called Iraq, sacrificing out national security; FIVE: he has allowed Iran to go nuclear. The list is endless and is nauseating.
NOBAMA IN 2012!!! enough of this crud - he's about to get us all killed.

Obama will be gone in 2012.
charityneverfaileth December 5, 2011 at 02:05 am
The New York Times in its March 11 article “Obama Seeks a Course in Pragmatism in the Middle East” writes, “Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, ‘No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square’.”
Ah yes, to be a dictator. What kind of American president says something like that?
Catherine Paull December 5, 2011 at 02:19 am
<<What kind of American president says something like that?>>
The kind of president who speaks plainly and honestly without guile or pretense. He didn't say he wanted to be president of China. He didn't say he wanted to be a dictator. He said it would be easier to be the president of Chine. And he's right, it probably would be. But there are people in this country who are desperate to condemn every word and action based on some crazed paranoia that is just all in their own heads (and on Fox News, of course).
charityneverfaileth December 5, 2011 at 02:28 am
Yes, that's the problem. He actually thinks that. Which of course implies a certain desire to be in that position. His obsequious bow to Hu Jintao was an embarrassing display by an American President. And he is without guile???? You have got to be kidding me
Catherine Paull December 5, 2011 at 02:41 am
You are making things up in your head. There is no such implication, except in the paranoid minds of the ditto-heads. The same kind of mind that thinks people are out to kill Christmas or make war on Christmas or some other such nonsense. You see a show of civility and respect for someone else's customs as fawning or "obsequious". That is pure nonsense. That kind of thinking explains why some people are so angry and upset about the customs and religious beliefs of others being given any respect. It's paranoia -- pure and simple.

Apparently you know nothing about protocol and the message it sends when the leader of the free world bows deeply to the ruler of a communist country. It conveys weakness. The way a person bows in an Asian country reflects what that person is communicating non verbally.Someone in an inferior position will address the person in a superior position by bowing lower and longer. Huo Jintao barely inclined himself while looking directly at Obama. Obama bowed quite low and looked downward. And the Chinese leader was visiting our country- Obama wasn't visiting his.
Even Bill Clinton understood this and never, never showed subservience to any world leaders. Because that(weakness) is exactly what powers like China and Iran will exploit. Does the world love us now that Obama is Pres.? It seems not. They have contempt for his weakness. And yes, that could wind up getting us into a war and getting many Americans killed. Peace through strength. Appeasement didn't do us much good in W.W. II Learn history my friend, because it always, always repeats itself.
Issy December 5, 2011 at 11:07 am
Charityneverfaileth.. Please tell me that was satire? President Bush bowed to the Saudi King and kissed the Pope's ring, does that mean the Vatican is going to attack us?
Catherine Paull December 5, 2011 at 11:53 am
We are already engaged in wars begun by W.Bush! So much for your fears about getting us into war - we are already there and far too many have died because of these Bush wars.
"Speak softly, and carry a big stick." This seems to be Obama's style - bin Ladin and at least 9 other prominent terrorists were killed or arrested during Obama's administration. Your paranoia is showing again and it seems to blind you to reality. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/09/the-terrorist-notches-on-obamas-belt/
charityneverfaileth December 5, 2011 at 12:22 pm
If you watch the video of Bush and the Saudi king, the only moment Bush leans forward is to allow a medal to be placed over his head, which is simply a practicality to make it easier to put the medal over his neck. Bush never leans forward again, and was clearly not bowing as the still photos make it appear. He also never kissed the Pope's ring.
And why did Pres. Obama, on the same tour refuse to bow, even slightly to the Queen of England? And gave her collection of CD's with his speeches on them? Yes, Bush started the Iraq war and Afghanistan which Obama is continuing and upping him one by starting the war war(oh I'm sorry police action- or whatever he had to say so he did not have to get the approval of Congress-much easier to act alone- you know-like being the emperor of China) inLibya.
Catherine Paull December 5, 2011 at 12:32 pm
I can only imagine your outrage if Obama was photographed holding hands with a Saudi Prince on not one, but several occasions. You really do need to take a step back and correct the prism through which you are viewing things! There is nothing to be afraid of when our head of state chooses to respect or partake in the customs of other cultures. It's what is being said and done behind these public displays that are of importance. Sometimes the public displays are in sync with policy and sometimes not. We all need to give a little more thought before jumping to silly conclusions.
Chris Clement December 5, 2011 at 12:35 pm
Am not amazed that a story about holidays has morphed into a political discussion, and who started what war. Am not amazed that people are at each other's throats because they disagree with what someone's opinion is. If someone wishes to worship a cow, so be it. It is NOT my place to joke about it. To me, religion is a private matter, so long as they don't try to shove it down someone else's throat. All this being written, I've found this forum to be interesting & informative. Personally, I respect all religions and been to services of many. But I'd like to add something that may or may not get a lot of play: man created god.
George Datino December 5, 2011 at 12:51 pm
Yeah Chris, I was thinking the same thing on this story morphing into a political discussion. I am wondering if Patch can build a forum to put all the Bush vs. Obama, Fox vs. CNN, Conservative vs. Liberal discussions. This way as topics morph into those disucssions, the comments can be placed and continued there. LOL!
Catherine Paull December 5, 2011 at 01:05 pm
Dear Mr. Datino:
I like your idea and would love to see it implemented! I know that I am part of the problem in this -- I rise to the bait too easily, something I am working on. Dear Mr/Ms Clement: I agree with all of your sentiments, except perhaps that man created god. You could be right, I admit, but I prefer to think otherwise and see no harm in doing so. Peace to all!
SRT December 5, 2011 at 01:13 pm
Man created god. So true. Where would he be without us!
I agree with George and Catherine, this discussion has run its course. Stick a fork in it, its done.
Katie Ryan O'Connor (Editor) December 5, 2011 at 01:38 pm
I agree, not a bad idea George! I'll definitely share that with our leadership. They love to hear what readers think, as do I. (By way of introduction, I'm the senior regional editor for all the Hudson Valley Patches -- 22 and counting!) Anyone can email me at kathleen@patch.com. I'd love to hear from you. Here's my 2 cents as an online editor: I'm happy to step in when a conversation has gotten out of control, but what about when it just gets heated in some places, interesting in others? Or goes completely off-topic but readers are still commenting and keeping the thread alive? Do I decide when a conversation is over or is that something the collective readership decides by moving on to something else? Maybe we need a "fork" icon, playing off SRT's comment. Any discussion that gets voted up to 5 forks is, indeed, over. I will say this for sure — anyone who thinks the average person doesn't care about politics or the direction of the country is totally and completely wrong.

All one has to know about this subject and the subjects contained therein can be found in the following:
"The last Christian died on the Cross" - Nietzsche "The Earth belongs in usufruct to the living" - Jefferson
SRT December 5, 2011 at 03:26 pm
Katie
I am still not sure what this has to do "politics or the direction of the country". It seems to me to be more of a distraction from real problems: a declining middle class, a soaring poverty rate, an incarceration rate second to none, a growing list of foreign military involvement etc.
Katie Ryan O'Connor (Editor) December 5, 2011 at 04:00 pm
@SRT: Speaking to some commenters' points that the discussion has veered from political correctness and holiday greetings into politics. I find people deeply passionate about politics on and off-line, despite conventional wisdom otherwise.
Shar December 6, 2011 at 01:57 pm
This article is simple. Liberals want Christians to stop with the "Merry Christmas" culture and make it a generic culture of "Happy Holidays" .
In a way it is political, brought on by those who want to force a fundamental change in our country, our culture our way of thinking our way of life. quote from "Michelle Obama
Catherine Paull December 6, 2011 at 02:57 pm
Shar: This is pure nonsense!! I am a Liberal and I want no such thing. And I don't know a single Liberal who does. What I want is the right to say Happy Holidays if I want to without some person berating me for abandoning my religious beliefs. I want to be able to require my employees to say Happy Holidays to our customers so that we are all inclusive - of Christians and everyone else. I want my Jewish and Muslim friends to feel as empowered in their own beliefs as I feel in my Christian beliefs. And I want you and anyone else who wants to say "Merry Christmas" to say it whenever you please (as long as your boss approves when you say it as a representative of the company, and as long as you don't try to make other people or businesses say it as well.)
Beth Wallach December 6, 2011 at 04:37 pm
All of this in the name of Christmas! I believe it was Washington Irving who said, "Let us keep our Christmas merry!" So let's get back on track....Merry Christmas, everyone!
Jill Gertz December 6, 2011 at 04:59 pm
Well there has been some good news this week. As I wrote in my first post Obama officials running VA want Christian symbols banned from burials (can you imagine?). They also had the Hospitals banning Christian material from hospital visits (Can you double imagine?).
This week Walter Reed had to back up and let Bibles in: "U.S. Military to Rescind Policy Banning Bibles at Hospital" "Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said they are rescinding a policy that prohibits family members of wounded military troops from bringing Bibles or any religious reading materials to their loved ones." http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/u-s-military-to-rescind-policy-banning-bibles-at-hospital.html
Lanning Taliaferro (Editor) December 6, 2011 at 07:39 pm
The piece in the Houston Chronicle describes the furor over burials. http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Hit-with-lawsuit-VA-denies-banning-God-at-2077968.php
Issy December 6, 2011 at 09:53 pm
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!.. The Va is require families to request a Christian service rather than possibly imposing a Christian service on non-Christian veterans. It is that simple.
This is not about banning Christian Services by the VA and is nothing to do with the President, it is just common sense and respect for our 'soldiers'.
Catherine Paull December 7, 2011 at 01:29 am
The paranoia of some people is mind-boggling! There is no banning of "God" or Christian anything. If a Christian service is requested it is happily given - it's not long imposed without being requested - which is really just common courtesy and respect. Geez, some people really do need to get a grip!!
Jill Gertz December 7, 2011 at 03:52 am
I judge had to get involved over the burials and other things:
"Secularism run amok" Arleen Ocasio seems to be setting herself up for a second rebuke from a federal judge. ..Ocasio has been, since 2009, the director of the Houston National Cemetery, which, at 419 acres, is the second-largest cemetery administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs, exceeded in size only by Arlington..Ocasio, the cemetery's Obama-appointed director, has been credibly accused of engaging in a pattern of censorship directed against private religious expression. The chapel has allegedly been closed, its cross and Bible removed, and it is now said to be used as a "meeting space" when it is unlocked at all. The carillon in the 75-foot bell tower no longer tolls on a regular basis. And members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the National Memorial Ladies, attending upon the bereaved families and friends at veterans' funerals, say they have been required to have their prayers pre-approved by Ocasio's office, and have been told that the words "God" and "Jesus" are not to be used by them if they wish to continue their volunteer service at the cemetery. This isn't the first episode of such trouble." ...more from cbsnews.com http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/07/08/opinion/main20077846.shtml

By the way, in our new system we have an update that includes a community moderation tool—it'sRead More not only Patch editors who can flag comments. What is it? Readers can flag any content they find objectionable on any Patch site at any time. We’ve put the flagging link in more places to make it easier to find and backed it with more sophisticated tools. Our goal is to recognize and reward readers who make our community great. How does it work? You’ll see these words — Flag as Inappropriate — on the top and bottom of Board posts, articles, blogs and notes, and next to every single comment anywhere on the site. To flag something, you simply click those words. What happens when you flag? It alerts us that something might be up with the content. When should you flag? We ask that you use your common sense and a general spirit of openness. You should never flag things that you simply disagree with and certainly not to clarify minor points. We encourage you to comment, post (or even start your own blog) to be heard on those things. You can review the Patch Terms of Use Ashley referred to above.

Unleashed dogs is getting to be a big problem in Peekskill. I see them routinely now. People areRead More letting their pit bulls out, their poodles, their chihuahuas - all kinds of dogs. Two days a go I watched a lady jogging on the track with her loose dog. The dog wasn't even supposed to be on the track no less loose. Some kid or elderly lady is going to get bit. Loose dogs also end up in more fights with other dogs.

Sue a sad fact that these days of “political correctness” individuals who exhibit rudeRead More and ignorant behavior are empowered by the rest of us. I know of a similar situation where the individuals will yell four letter words in the public areas with young children there, call others the foulest things, and in this case, they are black and gay so the race/gay card is used constantly. Until people make it known they are not going to tolerate their behavior it will not stop. Have you notified the property owner, complex board, and police, or maybe the board of health?

It seems Patch moves editors every year. Liz was here when I signed up. Then she was shortly movedRead More to Rye and Rasheed took over. He must have been here about a year and then he left when the new format was introduced. Both times patch started cooking and then it got cut down just as new staff got their mojo going. I know AOL/Patch needs to get some cash flow going quick (from what I've read) but I can't see what they are trying to do exactly by tipping the cart over and over
