Misconceptions About Old School Girl Scouts....
The Girl Scouts of today are much MUCH more than collected memories of badges and camping. Although still VERY important, camping and badges are not the only things that Girl Scouts of today embrace:
Here are some pretty kewl girl facts about the Girl Scouts:
- Girl Scouts were founded in March of 1912 (for people who didn’t have coffee yet today, that’s 101 years!)
- 3.2 million ACTIVE Girl Scouts around the world! (Of that, an estimated 890,000 adult members volunteer.)
- 2/3 of female members of Congress have been Girl Scouts.
The local Kings Ferry Group (which includes girls and their leaders from Montrose, Buchanan, Verplanck, Peekskill and Cortlandt Manor) host some pretty cool events like the Pajama and Pancake Party and penny social, Annual Fashion Show, Sock Hop, as well as camping outings. They also actively participate in many other events: environmental cleanups, first aid and emergency lessons, parades, cookie deliveries to our proud US Soldiers serving overseas and much more.
And here is the big misnomer debunked:
Girl Scouts is NOT just about cookies. Although a big part of the program because it teaches the girls entrepreneurship, the Girl Scout Organization focuses on each girl and how they can make a difference not only in their local communities, but across the nation.
Girl Scouting builds girl empowerment, confidence and character. The best part of it all? The girls have a blast with all of the activities and learn social, environmental and financial skills. Friendships are made that last a lifetime as a Girl Scout member and as an adult volunteer.
Here is what some of Girl Scouts love in the Kings Ferry Council:
“We get to see friends from other classes.” Danielle F., BV Brownie 2nd Grade “We get to eat a snack!” Alyssa K., Amber C., Paige J., Jenna D., BV Brownies 2nd Grade “Our Troop leaders are very nice.” Olivia D., BV Brownie 2nd Grade
“My Mom is one of my Girly Scout leaders. I love Girl Scouts because I get to see my best friends ever and my leaders.” Haleigh M., BV Daisy 1st Grade
“When I go to Girl Scouts, we do fun stuff. I love Girl Scouts!” Kacie B., BV Daisy 1st Grade
“I get to see my Mom. I get to see my friends. I get to draw and paint at Girl Scouts.” Juliana R, BV Daisy 1st Grade.
Want to volunteer and / or find out how to make a difference? Contact our local Kings Ferry Members to see if volunteering is right for you! Not only is it a great organization, but it is also quality time with your children and their friends.
