Theatre Lives in the Hudson Valley: Check Out Two Upcoming Productions in our Area

Although the Paramount is dark, another kind of live theatre lives in these two upcoming shows in our area.  If you culture vultures want to fill the void, I highly recommend these two productions:

Awake and Sing:

Cast member Richard Manichello describes the play as such: “Awake and Sing is Clifford Odets' masterpiece play set in the Bronx of 1934. Working class Jews, crammed in small apartments, took in boarders, scraped and struggled for every dime to make ends meet in Post-Depression New York. "Brother can you spare a dime..." Come and meet one such family, the Berger's. Poppa Jacob lives in with daughter Bessie and her husband, Myron, and two adolescents, Henni and Ralph. It's a little short on room for everyone, but full of love, bitterness, arguments, caring, memories, and hardship. Poppa's socialist/Marxist ideas clash with the Americanized new generation of Berger's. The 99% clashes with the 1%... rich Uncle Morty ... a successful dress manufacturer, and the old country Sam Feinschreiber clashes with the wisened War-Vet, Moe Axelrod, the paying guest in the household.  Come watch what our middle-class forefathers endured just to live free, find work, make it through the 1930's, and Awake & Sing.”

I had the opportunity to see this show in preview last night. This is the best local theatre company I have seen in a long time.  They actually are local actors, but they are also Equity actors for the most part. I was impressed and it takes a lot for me to be so inclined.  The ensemble was excellent, especially the actor who played Mo. I was riveted by his every move, glance, and word.  Everyone was spot on, except the actor who played the “Mama” who yelled too much, in my opinion.  She started off this way and there was nowhere to go. This vocal level may have been an artistic choice – the woman was, after all, neurotic and troubled - but the yelling at times distorted what she was saying and that did not serve the play. (Actors also spoke on the opening and closing of doors, which also interfered with what was being said.)  Otherwise, “Mama” was excellent, as was the rest of the cast.  As for the Odets words, what poetry, the sheer use of language, metaphorical yet urban and ethnic was breathtaking.  Technical note: Never a brown box with twine for cake from a bakery; always a white box with that signature New York red and white striped string tied in a bow.  As a native Bronx-ite, that prop jumped out and screamed at me, WRONG! as Mo brought the dessert into the house.  See this play.  You will be impressed and awakened to sing its praises. Thanks, Morty!

Lady Wife:

Full disclosure.  I am the co-artistic director of the Peekskill Playhouse, the company that is producing this show at the Bean Runner Café, Peekskill, NY. That said, I also recommend this show to you.  Part of the Sunday Afternoon Live Theatre, Wine and Cheese Tastings, Live Music Series presented by the Bean and the Peekskill Playhouse. On October 28, doors open at the café for a staging of Anne Connolly's one-woman play, LADY WIFE, about the external and internal mind-set of a resident in an Assisted Living facility. Anne was voted Best Actress at the Sixth Annual 2012 AERY Theatre Company's 20/20 One-act Play Competition. Lady Wife was voted Best Play.  Curtain goes up at 4:30 followed by Wine and Cheese tastings, and live music by Disco Cookie (whose music is not disco, but a cool blend of eclectic tunes by a bunch of highly talented high school students you won’t want to miss.  Donation suggested at the door, $12 for all three events.  Make reservations to secure a table – cabaret seating, and food and beverages available – at 914 737 1701.  The Bean Runner Café is at the corner of Ester and S. Division Streets, just down the road from a little historic theatre that is crying to open its doors.

I never heard so much baloney. Don't let them brainwash you kids. Solar and wind are frauds. ARead More windmill just threw off a blade that weighs tons. They break all the time and wind energy is the most dangerous and not efficient. With all these non profits not paying taxes they have certainly made a lot of us who pay the billsRead More for them non profit also.

Don't believe a word of HVHC mission statement they tossed out the Meth Clinic since it carriesRead More negativity to the new and improved hospital.

It is dangerous and a menace to our already horrible traffic on 6. Thank God none of those kids gotRead More hit running in between cars looking for change. Traffic was backed up all through Mohegan...Poor choice of a way to raise monies for a good cause.

Well, well, well, I left Peekskill 2 years ago and Mad Dumb Mary Foster is still in office andRead More better yet still wrecking havoc upon the wonderful people of Peekskill. How's Targets doing down on Louisa St.? The New Firehouse is beautiful. (That's a Joke) What happened to Main St. some drug lord bought new softer lighting so their street level dealers are harder to be recognize by the Police? Paramount closed, Paramount reopened what happen? The Republican in charge didn't pad your pocket Mary? Wouldn't bow down to you? Tumolo out Johansen in. Gene was great Eric will do a great job too just don't short change him. Frank Catalina running for Mayor? Dear people of Peekskill DON'T SCREW THIS UP !!! Everyone crying over the Methadone clinic moving into town? Afraid the "drug addicts" will destroy the town. "?" First of all the Addict's already live among you, shop in your businesses, eat in you restaurants, vote in political elections, and own businesses and restaurants that you patronize. These people are recovering from a addiction just like an alcoholic recovering from alcoholism. They are not thugs, thieves, rapists, they are hard working people like you and me, well like some of you and me, trying to make a living. Mary called the area they want to open the clinic a residential neighborhood. "?" Sewage treatment plant, Highland Self Storage, Hudson Valley Bus Company, residential. Interesting. Still see the day workers hanging out in the same spots, illegal immigrants? No. Undocumented Democrats, Yes. No Peekskill Celebration? Italian Feast? Assumption School closing it's doors? Notice a few more empty stores in town. All on your watch Foster. Miss living down here, don't miss Foster and her gang of thugs. Is Havernik still your puppy on a string. Mary? WHY?! WHY?! I Know, follow you leader Obama and blame George Bush for everything.
joshua tanner May 20, 2013 at 11:37 pm
I'm not for or against the clinic. I can see the neighbors have a point against it. I can see theRead More Foster crew really mashed this situation up. However knowing Peekskill as I do I can think of several bars that bring in more active criminals and drug dealers than any methadone clinic ever could
W Kelly May 19, 2013 at 07:31 am
For all of you in support of a Meth Clinic I spoke to 4 police officer and 2 State Troopers that allRead More said not a good thing for any community. I wonder why?? to all the supporters. Look at that Renaissance Project in Ellenville Security Guard killed and nurse was almost stabbed to dealth with months of recovery in a hospital. Many said oh if it wasn't for a Meth Clinic I wouldn't have made it. Oh FYI many in treatment 10 plus years obviously it isn't working folks. In defense of Mr. Catalina I guess we need to ask Mary Foster exactly how much this Article 78 cost in full and sure we will have our answer. Atty fees are astronomical if I knew we could beat this I would pay my fair share in taxes for the future of Peekskill. Unfotunately I don't believe everyone is willing to do that in these tough econonic times.

The long suffering tax payer should look at it as them paying for their extravagant health care andRead More pension plans. As for lending a hand they have had our hand outs for way too long.

We've got the Constitution on our side. Although it is being eroded, we still have quite a largeRead More number of the population who still believes in it- 46,455 gun background checks per day since bama got in office- ( yes, we already do background checks for the majority of gun purchases)
Teleman May 19, 2013 at 04:57 pm
Let's face it- we can find niche studies to suit any position we take- but the justice departmentRead More study I am citing is a large piece that goes from 1993-2010- before, during and after the 1994 assault weapons ban -and it spans a pretty large time frame in which to draw these conslusions. This is a very comprehensive look at gun crime in the US- and it shows massive decline despite rising ownership. Deny all you want, because to continue your agenda, it's your only choice.
Abby Normal May 19, 2013 at 11:27 am
Tele, I keep hearing the mantra from the right saying more guns equal less crime. The truth howeverRead More flies in the face of this propaganda. A recent study actually shows that the highest homicide rates are in the states with the fewest gun controls. States like Louisiana, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alaska just to name a few. Sure, there are fewer homicides in Alaska than in New York, but adjusted for population, the per-ca-pita homicide rate is significantly lower in New York.
Teleman May 15, 2013 at 04:11 pm
I stand by my statement- until these contracts are fully re-negotiated and the unions startRead More contributing to their benefits and taking zero % or minimal raises, the taxes will continue to increase year after year- Buchanan will no longer be the so-called "bargain" some claim it is.
Sick of the Lies May 10, 2013 at 10:04 am
Hey Fly, before you make comments, you should check the facts. The contracts are alive and well.Read More Mr. Donahue should try learning to read and checking the facts before sending his brilliant letters to the editor in for publishing. They are almost always entirely fictional....but perhaps he really believes what he says. Yeah, right. He intentionally makes up stories to sucker people like you into believing his nonsense.
Fly on the Wall May 10, 2013 at 02:47 am
All of those lucrative 2% contract raises have since expired! DUH. Unlike the 15% raises yourRead More glorious mayor has doled out with great regularity.
