"Choose My Plate" replaces the "Food Guide Pyramid"

A blog on healthy lifestyle written by someone who knows, a Hudson Valley Hospital Center nurse.

Overweight and obesity are epidemic in America today.  In an effort to help combat obesity, the federal government and Michelle Obama have released a new food group symbol called “Choose My Plate”.  This new icon will replace the “Food Guide Pyramid”.  The new icon is meant to help people think about building a healthy plate at each meal.  What does the icon mean?  Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables at every meal.  Choose smaller portions, about a quarter of your plate, of whole grains and lean proteins.  Also include a source of low fat dairy or calcium at each meal.  Visit the website to get more information.

The Choose My Plate website is available to provide practical information and help people build healthier diets.  The website provides resources and tools to assess your diet and provide nutrition education.  These online resources and tools can empower people to make healthier food choices for themselves, their families, and their children. Later this year, additional tools will also be added to help personalize management of dietary and physical activity choices.

This may be the first time you have seen Choose My Plate, but it will not be the last.  This is just the beginning of a long term initiative to combat obesity and give clear simple messages about what we should be eating.  How does your plate compare?

Don't you think the Federal government should stay out of our lives as much as possible. Federal Gov. has it's place and it is not at my dinner table. I know how to eat healthy...those who don't, well shame on them because, information and plenty of it is out there and always has been, healthy food for a healthy human. The Federal government is becoming Big Brother. Americans do not need another control freak intruding into our lives.
Unfortunately, many people do not know how to eat healthy, as evidenced by the obesity epidemic in this country. Choose My Plate is an attempt to provide very simple education to those who are not educated, including low income areas and underpriviledged school districts. Obesity costs American's well over 100 billion dollars a year. A dollar spent on prevention will save much more in healthcare costs in the future.

Unfortunately, there will always be over eaters and some with a condition that they cannot help. Why punish them. Will you deny them health care? Medicare is already warning the old people good quality care by reducing what they will pay to Doctors and hospitals. Don't get me wrong...if you can help someone lose the fat and keep it off..then good for you. But government should stay out of people's business. Government is not our NANNY.
