1.) Yom Kippur Begins Today
Yom Kippur is, in short, the holiest day of the year in Jewish religion and culture. It is also referred to as the “Day of Atonement,” and the tradition is to solemnly fast for repentance and atonement of sins. Yom Kippur marks the end of the annual High Holy Day period (Sept. 16 to Sept. 26 in 2012), which begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. On Sept. 25, observation will begin at sunset.
2.) Hudson Valley Hospital Center Hosts Pumpkin Carving Demonstration
Today, at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Farmer’s Market off Route 202 in Cortlandt Manor, the hospital’s Center for Rehabilitation will host a fun family event to instruct parents and children on how to safely carve their Halloween Jack-o-Lantern. Staff from Historic Hudson Valley’s Great Jack-o-Lantern Blaze will work on some of the same intricate carvings that are displayed at their annual event at Van Cortlandt Manor. The Hospital will also raffle off two free tickets to the event – running weekends from October 6 through November 11 – and give away free safety carving kits to the first 100 people. The Blaze carving demonstration will be held from 3 p.m.- 4 p.m., but staff will be on hand during the entire Farmer’s Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to discuss safety issues.
3.) Free Holiday Arrangements for Local Businesses

4.) Take Some Time Out of Your Busy Day and Read a Comic Book
Today is National Comic Book Day. This is a day for people of all ages to enjoy, since the first-ever comic book superhero made his first appearance in 1938. While some characters have new looks, and some of their storylines have changed completely, comic enthusiasts can still share their love of their favorite characters, old and new. So whether it’s the Barnes and Nobles in Mohegan Lake, the Field or Hendrick Hudson libraries, or 3rd Universe Comic Emporium in Croton-on-Hudson, today is the day to sit back and read a comic book. I’d let you borrow one of mine, but my mom threw them all away while I was in college.
5.) The Peekskill School Board Meets Tonight
The Peekskill Board of Education meets tonight. The board will go into executive session at 5:30 p.m. before opening the public portion of the meeting at 7 p.m. inside the Peekskill High School cafeteria. Go here for a meeting agenda.

Personally, I believe the "cops" should be focusing on the known areas to buy drugs -- it does not take a rocket scientist to see the dealers. What happened to the bike patrols used by the police dept ???

This is a very comprehensive look at gun crime in the US- and it shows massive decline despite rising ownership. Deny all you want, because to continue your agenda, it's your only choice.

A recent study actually shows that the highest homicide rates are in the states with the fewest gun controls. States like Louisiana, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alaska just to name a few.
Sure, there are fewer homicides in Alaska than in New York, but adjusted for population, the per-ca-pita homicide rate is significantly lower in New York.
