A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect from the National Weather Service as cells move over the area from the west between 7 and 8 p.m.
A tornado watch is in effect until 11 p.m.
For the rest of the night, strong and gusty winds—up to 60 mph—should be the biggest hazard expected from a night of rain and thunderstorms.
"If a tornado is spotted...act quickly and move to a place of safety in a sturdy structure, such as a basement or small interior room," the NWS warning states.
The impact: downed power lines, downed trees—and power outages.
Winds this strong can also make driving difficult, particularly for vehicles with high profiles (such as SUVs and trucks), the NWS warns.
"Use extra caution," says the NWS.
The temperature has risen as night has fallen though the forecast calls for an overnight low of 59˚F.
