Peekskill school officials said a second search that was conducted by bedbug-sniffing dogs turned up negative Thursday evening.
Bedbugs were found on a student at the Peekskill Middle School on Tuesday. After the discovery, school officials contacted pest control, brought in a bug-sniffing dogs and cleaned every area that was tagged by the dogs.
“The situation was handled quickly, firmly and responsibly,” said David Fine, principal of the middle school. “This is an unfortunate incident and our safety is paramount with respect to our children, homes, and families. The matter is being taken very seriously as we continue to contact outside agencies and the city with regard to this issue and possible solutions for when they occur.”
The child who was initially found with the bedbugs has yet to return to the school, according to district spokeswoman Laura Belfiore. Pest control workers will doa search of the child’s residence and make sure it is clear of bedbugs before the child is allowed back in school.
