Entergy Submits Bid to Provide 1,375 Megawatts from Indian Point in 2016

Buchanan, NY - Entergy today has submitted a proposal to provide 1,375 megawatts of competitively priced electricity from Indian Point Energy Center, beginning in 2016, in response to a request for proposals by the New York Power Authority. Entergy’s proposal requires no public subsidies, which will likely distinguish its proposal from other RFP responses that will seek such subsidies.

“The Indian Point power will save New York consumers billions of dollars in unnecessary expenditures in the form of higher electric rates and public subsidies,” said Mike Twomey, vice president of external affairs for Entergy Wholesale Commodities. “This is critical given that New Yorkers already bear among the highest residential electric rates in the country.”

To best serve the interests of New York consumers, and to help protect them from unnecessary expenditures, Entergy proposes to provide NYPA with long-term power from Indian Point, building on the positive commercial relationship NYPA and Entergy have enjoyed for more than a decade.

Continuing to rely on power from Indian Point also would potentially avoid a 15% increase in carbon emissions and roughly a 7 to 8% increase in nitrogen oxide emissions.
Entergy is committed to meeting the NRC’s requirements to secure license renewals for Indian Point. In recent years, Entergy affiliates have successfully obtained renewed operating licenses for three other merchant nuclear facilities located in the Northeast, including the James A. FitzPatrick facility in upstate New York. This proven track record demonstrates Entergy’s commitment to safe and reliable operation of its facilities.

Since purchasing Indian Point more than 10 years ago, Entergy has invested more than $1 billion to improve and maintain these facilities.
