Emergency Drills, School Board Meetings and Planning Updates

Five things you need to know today, Oct. 2.

1.) Hotel, Restaurant Proposals Coming Down the Peekskill Planning Pike
During Monday’s Peekskill Common Council work session, acting City Manager Brian Havranek announced that George Liaskos has finally submitted his application for a Holiday Inn Express at the corner of John Walsh Boulevard and Louisa Street. The city planning department also announced that it has discussion with applicants for a 40 seat restaurant on 922 Main St. called the Iron Vine, a Subway Restaurant on 9 Bank Street and cajun restaurant on 55 Hudson Ave. called The Bayou. The Bayou applicant is the owner of a restaurant of the same name in Mount Vernon. The Peekskill Brewery currently occupies 55 Hudson Ave., but is planning to move to a larger space on South Water Street. 

2.) Emergency Drill Planned at Indian Point
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are monitoring an emergency drill today at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan.  The emergency response plans of New York State, the counties of Or ange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester, and the plants’ licensee - Entergy - will be evaluated during the drill.

3.) Peekskill School Board Meets Today
The Peekskill school board is scheduled to meet tonight at the Peekskill High School Library. The board is expected to start the meeting in executive session before beginning the public session of the meeting at 7 p.m. There will be a ribbon cutting for the new high school technology department and cafeteria inside the library, prior to the meeting at 5:30 p.m. State Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, will also be on hand to present a $75,000 grant that will be used to provide wireless internet throughout the high school building.

4.) Heroes Honored Today at Hudson Valley Hospital Center
Hudson Valley Hospital Center will unveil its "Wall of Heroes" today at 2 p.m. during a ceremony in the lobby of the Hospital at 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor. This year, 10 employees are being honored.  Employees live in Westchester and Putnam counties. Each month the Hospital recognizes an employee who has been nominated by co-workers. At the end of the year that employee is honored at the Heroes Ceremony and their portrait hung on the wall along the front corridor of the Hospital, where it remains for the year.

5.) Garden Club Presents Talk on MacGregory Brook Tonight
The Garden Club of Peekskill is presenting a talk tonight about the restoration of MacGregory Brook tributary to the Hudson River. The talk will be given by members of the Peekskill Conservation Advisory at 7:30 p.m., at the Field Library, located at 4 Nelson Ave.
