Columbus Day Closings, Carnivals and Races

Five things you need to know today, Oct. 8.

1. No Common Council Today
Peekskill City Hall is closed for Columbus Day. So the Peekskill Committee of the Whole and Common Council meetings will be held tomorrow at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

2. Happy Columbus Day
Today is the celebration of when Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas on Oct. 12, 1492. Public schools and government buildings, including the post office, are closed.

3. Off to the Races
The Taconic Road Runners Club and the City of Peekskill Recreation Department is hosting “Running Races for Children” on today. The races, which are open to students in grades 1-6, will take place at the Depew Park cinder track.  Registration begins 9 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Pool and the first race is at 9:30 a.m.  The entry fee is $3.  All runners must be accompanied by an adult and must have the attached permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.  Check out the PDF attached to this story for more information.

4. Last Day for Columbus Weekend Carnival
Today is the last day of the Columbus Weekend Carnival at Peekskill's Riverfront Green Park. The carnival will be open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Proceeds form the event will benefit Peekskill Celebration and The Peekskill Lions Club. 5. Vendors Wanted for Hudson Hop & Harvest
The organizers of the Hudson Hop & Harvest are looking for arts and crafts exhibitors for the event, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 13 in front of the Peekskill Brewery. Merchandise sold should be relative to kitchen and cooking. Utensils, cookware, decorations and apparel, is ideal. Fall and winter clothing is also appropriate.
