Budget Increase Approved for Peekskill Library

The Field Library's budget will increase by $17,000 to $785,000 in 2013.

A proposition calling for a two-percent budget increase for the Field Library in Peekskill was headed for a approval Tuesday.

The proposition calls for the library’s budget to increase to $785,000, which represents a $17,000 increase, next year.

The tax increase will average out to about $2 per household.

The proposition had 1,205 yes votes and 762 no votes as 2 a.m. Wednesday, with about 86 percent, or 19 out of 22, precincts reporting.

Library officials said the increase is needed to deal with growing health insurance costs and mandated state retirement system payments.

The library also anticipates a decrease in the circulation reimbursement it receives from the Town of Cortlandt.

I didn't realize the budget was that big. Where does the money go? Do they pay any rent, or is it all salary and benefits. Surprising.

I'll tell you where it doesn't go. Borzoi books - the highest name in literature. Come on Sibyl, get with the program and invest more in the Dawg. If the residents of eekskill were engrossed in the Haruki Murakami or the Andre Gide, they wouldn't be out wilding and drinking the 40 ouncers.

I am disillusioned to read that the monies went to "Library officials said the increase is needed to deal with growing health insurance costs and mandated state retirement system payments." When does this end paying for these type of increases...I am not getting any increase from my job!! I stupidly thought the monies were going to be used to upgrade the library with things like computers, books etc...I would NEVER had voted yes if I knew where it was going to be allocated.

Any increase in budget should go to upgrade and upkeep. The place desperately needs a fresh coat of paint. It smells and feels filthy. And, what happened to the Science Fiction Section???? Let's have a separate hispanic library rather than clearing shelves for literature in spanish!

EVERY year the library has a proposition for more spending and every year it passes. ALL spending propositions, bonds etc pass in Peekskill because many people don't pay taxes directly. They are renters and many are on the gov teat in some fashion. Peekskill Schools could propose a billion dollar bond to install golden water fountains in every classroom and it would pass.

Hopefully the staff is paying into their health insurance coverage.
