Small Business Vs. Big Corporations

There are ways that local small businesses survive in a big box store world. Here are a few examples of companies that are doing this successfully.

How can a small business go up against the big corporations?

There are ways. Here are a few examples of companies that are doing this successfully:

One, make sure your business evolves with the times to stay relevant.  BestWeb, a local technology company that has been providing services since 1996, realized that they needed to update their name to better represent their services. So they asked their customers, local residents and businesses to help them pick a new name.  Participants are encouraged to visit www.bestweb.net/newname by September 5, 2011 to place their vote.  Once the new name is determined they will update their logo and website. This is a smart way to draw new customers in and gain some publicity.

Another way is to develop a unique niche that big corporations can’t mirror; here are some great examples: the Green Growler, that sells fresh craft beer in growlers, bottled and canned beer, homebrew supplies and artisanal beer food; Treasure N Tales, a unique boutique, which has a wide variety of products plus it is a fun place to visit; Blue Pig ice cream, which is made from milk/cream from aHudson Valley Fresh dairy co-op, and is free of hormones and antibiotics (it is delicious); The Black Cow, not just a coffee shop, but the best place to meet and find out what is happening; Baked by Susan; Feed the Birds; Groovy on Grand, and there are many more. All understand that they have to provide a unique experience to bring in the customers.

But, these small businesses can't just do it alone, it’s more important than ever to support your local businesses and give back to your community.  Don’t let the big chains and companies take over.  So next time you need to make a purchase think of your town and the stores that truly appreciate your patronage.
