Cinco De Mayo; 12 Grapes 1,000th Live Show; Stay Awake-a-Thon

Five things you need to know today, May 2.

1.  Cinco De Mayo

It is May 2 today. That means three more days until the Mexican celebration of their culture and pride, Cinco De Mayo. Peekskill will go all out for the event. Streets will be closed all day from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will be holding a party with many Hispanic acts including Los Leales, Los Rufianes and more.

Also, will hold its opening day on Saturday. If you want a break from the Mexican fiesta, get a taste of American music history by stopping by Beale Street (located on South Steet) at 6 p.m. to see Elvis perform.

N. Division street will be closed off again on Sunday for 1,000 live music performance, another party sure to be a good time. Read details .

2. Stay Awake-a-Thon Raises Money for Cancer Center, Cancer Camp for Kids

For a good time for a cause this Saturday, you can check out the Stay Awake-a-thon. The Hen Hud Leos are hoping to raise $75,000 at the event this Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Hudson Valley Hospital Cancer Center and to Happiness is Camping, a camp for children with cancer. So plan for extra sleep Friday night so you can stay awake and help raise funds for a great cause. Read more about the event on its founder Debbie Costello’s

 

3. Poetry Slam at the Field Library

At 3:30 p.m. award-winning slam poet Roger Bonair-Agard will perform at the Gallery in the He is a two-time National Poetry Slam Champion and veteran of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Bonair-Agard is also the author of two books, artistic director and co-founder of the louderARTS Project, and poet in residence with VisionIntoArt, an interdisciplinary arts ensemble. Refreshments will be served.

4. Westchester Jazz Competition

JazzForum Arts is holding a first annual vocal jazz competition on May 5. Interested singers can download an audition form and bring it with them to audition on May 5. Read more .

5. Budget Voter Registration

The Lakeland School District budget voter registration is at Lakeland High School today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
