Bronxville's Underhills Crossing Turns 18

The Manhattan-style eatery opened its doors back in 1995.


Underhills Crossing Owner Steven Palm can hardly believe that his restaurant has been in existence for almost two decades. And what would an anniversary be without a celebration? The Bronxville restaurant will be marking its milestone with a week of vintage menus, cocktails and prices that reflect the best of the past 18 years. The festivities begin next week, as the restarants marks its anniversary on Tuesday.

Palm started the restaurant back in 1995 with the help of his parents, family and friends. He says that he has never settled for anything less than making sure that his restaurant was the best in the village.

"I am very proud that Underhills Crossing does its best to be 100% at all times," said Palm. "It is a huge challenge and of course impossible to be perfect, but I believe that together with our outstanding culinary and floor staff we come pretty close. We have gone through many changes in decor, but have always kept the integrity of the original Underhills Crossing."

Palm says the economy is the major challenge for any business today, but more so in the restaurant environment, because there are so many choices and price points that a guest considers before dining out.

"Underhills does not try to compete with other restaurants in the area," said Palm. "We have always been unique and having a variety of eating establishments in the area brings people from all over to our town. We listen to our guests and hope that we give them the dining experience that they expect and deserve."
 
When Palm's family moved to Westchester, his first job was as a waiter at Alex and Henrys, which he says was known for its catering and elegant restaurant. He also worked at Rockwells in Tuckahoe. While working there, Palm says he got a completely different perspective on the restaurant business. These days, Palm, who currently lives in Bronxville, also owns Harrys of Hartsdale, an upscale steak house and oyster bar.

I am and have been a great fan of Underhill's Crossing. I am delighted to have friends from the City to eat there, as I consider it fully competitive. Re Underhill: In the early 18th Century, an Underhill had a saw and grist mill where Pondfield Road West now crosses the Bronx River. He built a bridge across the Bronx River, after which it was called Underhill's Crossing.
