The 30,000 square foot on Route 6 that has sat vacant for the last few years will soon be occupied by another commercial retail chain. Big Lots has purchased the building, received building permits and will start renovation to its interior in coming weeks, Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said at a Town Board meeting this month.
Big Lots is a discount retailer that focuses on closeout and overstock merchandise. There are more than 1,400 Big Lots in 48 states.
The company plans to open the Cortlandt location at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year, Puglisi said. The new business will bring about 60 to 80 jobs to the area.
The building was empty for the last few years after the chain Circuit City went into bankruptcy. It took about three to four years of legal procedures in bankruptcy court before a settlement was reached and a bank was able to take over the building. The bank then sold it to Big Lots, Puglisi said.
