At the Reef Transforms to Table 9

A 40-year-old area favorite is getting a new look and a new name.

After 40 years of success with he surf and turf staple’s owners are giving it a new look and a new name. The new restaurant will be called Table 9 and will feature a more diverse and expanded menu and a totally new look – new furniture, lightings, design and exterior, designed by The Jackson Creative Group from Rhode Island.

“We will have diverse salads, and you will still be able to get a steak,” said owner Demetri Vourliotis, to give an idea of the range of offerings at Table 9. Vourliotis purposefully kept his descriptions vague so as not to ruin the surprise when they reopen.

Vourliotis is the second generation owner and the family celebrated the restaurant’s 40th anniversary in January. His and his uncles’ daughters have just graduated from college and want to be in the restaurant business too.

“As our third generation gets involved we figured we’d do it up and give it a whole new fresh look,” Vourliotis said.

“For 40 years to be same type of restaurant is almost unheard of today. It ran its course and we figured it’s time.”

Vourliotis expects Table 9 to open in mid-April or early May and looks forward to welcoming back his customers.

The family also owns the in Buchanan and Pastels Diner in Peekskill, also community favorites.

biggest question for me (and potential deal breaker!) is will there still be a salad bar?
Joseph Agosta May 9, 2012 at 10:55 pm
I had all intentions of trying the new Table 9 but have since changed my mind when a good friend who is a retired teacher and well respected in his community went there for an interview and was treated life garbage by the "General Manager"! Looked to me like his age played a factor in who they are hiring.
Gina santiago May 16, 2012 at 03:07 am
Sounds and looks like a night club will it be????
Gloria Flick June 9, 2012 at 07:39 pm
Would love to see a menu!
Megan June 11, 2012 at 12:39 pm
When are they opening?
Beth Ryan June 20, 2012 at 12:55 am
They have a history of not treating their workers very well>>just my opinion. And yes age is a factor to them.
Liz Giegerich (Editor) June 20, 2012 at 02:58 am
Sorry for delay, just seeing this Megan. They opened last Monday! Let us know what you think.
Paula Sims June 21, 2012 at 02:44 pm
No, there is not. Salads are $5-10.
Paula Sims June 21, 2012 at 02:49 pm
3 entrees- salmon, scallops&shrimp, and marinated pork chops- all 3 bland, unseasoned, dull. The vegetables were plain, steamed, boring. Service was slow, and the wrong side dish was served. Then we were charged $5 for the side of broccoli which was supposed to be part of the entree. The waiter tried to tell us not to judge the quality of the rest of the menu based on 3 entrees. Huh? 3/3 were bad, and the $5 salad was meager. I loved The Reef. I will not go back to Table 9.
Paula Sims June 21, 2012 at 02:51 pm
Oh, and when we gave our negative comments, the manager was informed and chose not to come talk to us, or offer any incentive to return.

What happened to the Reef? We ate here and we were so disappointed. There was no salad bar, no warm individual crusty bread, no seasoning on the steak. and no tablecloths. We felt like we were in an expensive diner. We will not be returning to what used to be our favorite restaurant.

What a disappointment!
We liked the Reef, and decided to try the new restaurant with an open mind to the changes. What we received was poor quality food at grossly inflated prices. We never did receive the side dish that was to accompany the entree, and the tuna salad was 4 tiny strips of thinly sliced tuna and all lettuce. We made mention of this to the waitress and she couldn't have cared less. Most of the staff were young kids who didn't seem to care if you were there or not. Sorry Table 9 . . . we and are friends will never be back. David Thorp

This is not The Reef anymore. It is a completely new concept with new food, new design, and new staff. Just like any other new business in the area trying to get off on the right foot and move forward there are some growing pains in the beginning. We were in there 3 times and noticed significant improvement each time. I think we need to be more tolerant of our community members who are trying to bring something new and innovative to us. What else do we have in this area??? I hope you give Table 9 another chance and come back. I certainly will continue to patronize their establishment until I have reason to do otherwise!
SM July 11, 2012 at 11:34 pm
I wasn't there to witness your experience, but I disagree with your statement of "grossly inflated" prices. Have you been anywhere else in the area? Dinner for 2 in 2012 costs about $40-50 for an average meal.
Carol Hamel July 20, 2012 at 02:17 pm
what happened to the nice family and the good food.? These reviews are horrible. My son didn't like it but I thought he was just being a bit fussy. Guess not. Too bad. It was our place of choice for so many occasions. no more.
Paula Sims July 20, 2012 at 02:47 pm
SM- what else is there in the area? Try La Villetta (sp?). Good food, friendly service, fair prices. Division Street Cafe.Sounds like you are a friend of Table 9. Why should I keep going back to see if they improve when there are plenty of other places to try. Even King Buffet is a better choice.

Sorry to say my experience was not a good one either; my family has eaten there many times over the years and we've always been pleased with the food, service, ambience, etc. My younger son and I went a few weeks ago and my dinner of scallops and shrimp was tasteless; the butter knife they provided could barely saw through my cold-in-the-center broccoli and my son's entree was a huge plate of lettuce with a sparse handful of chopped chicken on top. The prices were a little on the high side but the disappointing dinner is what will keep me from a return visit.

If you do not mind a little extra drive time try Orfinios in Briacliff, family run and good food.

wow as a fan of the reef I was waiting to try Table 9... guess now I will save my money... the Cortlandt Colonial at the rock cut does a fine job...
hello:) July 24, 2012 at 01:05 am
I went to Table 9 for a birthday and had amazing food, great calamari, awesome ahi tuna, but the service didn't cut it by a long shot, the plates from the entrees remained on the table until the runner brought out our desserts ,which were absolutely delicious, by the way, at which point we had to ask him to take some of the plates with him back to the kitchen. The manager wasn't any better, she couldn't even carry a cup of coffee. The staff either needs to be trained or replaced.
Helen levin August 2, 2012 at 08:00 pm
Don't waste your money. The food is awful, tastes like microwaved. I ordered chicken Marsala, they chicken was cut up scraps ( tasted boiled) over , over cooked pasta. I took one bite and that was all. I brought it home for the wildlife they also rejected it. They renovated the wrong thing instead of spending so much on all the 9s should have gotten quality food!!
Joan Weise August 3, 2012 at 07:55 pm
we were regulars on Friday nights and loved it there. Having tried Table 9, we now have a different opinion entirely.
The food is bland and tasteless, the menu seems so much more limited. The service was not much to rave about. The glassware, including those for wine, were grey and cloudy looking with water spots all over them. NOT acceptable! Please go back to the Old Reef and make a lot of people happy again; we certainly miss going there.
Danny C August 8, 2012 at 03:55 pm
I agree w/ working out the quirks when opening an establishment, at this point it shoudl be smooth sailing. I agree w/ some of the coments. Some of the food was bland. I did enjoy a salad there, which was big enough to share amongst a table of four. I had a descent server, nothing to brag about nor complain about. I wish them luck. I think they do in fact try to hire young girls for their looks rather than any age for their brains or experience. Too bad they can't find some eye candy that come with experience and performs up to par of the standards needed. I would likely go back, would likely not reccomend as a must try, or pick as a place to dine if it were up to me.
Peggy Keesler August 14, 2012 at 12:05 am
I have been to Table 9 on five occasions and have never been disappointed. The selections are numerous, covering tastes for everyone! The portions are generous and the staff are more than helpful. You don't need a salad to make a good restaurant, where everyone spills all the food all over the place anyway.

This is for Kevin- You are really missing out on a big local audience, namely, Putnam Valley. WeRead More are like the forgotten stepchild even though we are part of the same community as Cortlandt and Peekskill. You guys really need to start giving us some coverage, and if you need a reporter, I will send in my resume. Better yet, you can read all my many comments in the PCP. There's a lot going on here that nobody writes about that would be interesting to many readers.

It seems Patch moves editors every year. Liz was here when I signed up. Then she was shortly movedRead More to Rye and Rasheed took over. He must have been here about a year and then he left when the new format was introduced. Both times patch started cooking and then it got cut down just as new staff got their mojo going. A new editor with a new format seems like starting from scratch again. I know AOL/Patch needs to get some cash flow going quick (from what I've read) but I can't see what they are trying to do exactly by tipping the cart over and over
