A Piece of Automotive History Brought Back to Life

A tribute FDNY Fire Chief's car.

As I said, "every old car has a story" and we would like to tell you about our friends 1962 Dodge Dart and just what is so special about it. Seven years ago Gary Urbanowicz walked into our shop with two pictures one was of the car he purchased, the other was the finished product of what he was wishing for it to look like. We, at his request, removed the engine and transmission, and the car had left to a body shop, for three years Garys note with his to do list was taped to the wall, and frankly we wondered where the car had went.

You see there was a lot of work to be done. This rather rough looking car was to be made a special tribute car for Gary's father. It was no longer going to be a stick shift non-power streering, non-power brake car, but a push button automatic, with power steering and power brakes with the old tried and true 318 polyblock motor.

Now, as these years pasted by we got to know Gary, you see the reason for picking this car was to turn it into a FDNY Fire Cheifs Car just as they looked in 1962 right down to the bubblegum light, and the phone, yes before we had cell phones they did put real phones in cars, odd looking by today's standards.

When the Dodge Dart came back it had been painted fire engine red, now it was our turn to clean up and update the engine, the brakes, the steering, install those small detail items. This project has become one of our favorites, because we were building it for someone who has a lot of pride for a fireman, and not just any fireman, but a son paying tribute to his father.

Since completion of this car Gary has been able to drive it all over and has atteneded so many events, many personally requested for the fire departments. It has been a joy for us to help him restore this vehicle. Should you see Gary driving this Dodge around ask him questions about it. It's very cool. And we feel honored to have a part in this.
