Volunteers Wanted for Peekskill Shoreline Cleanup

With construction on Scenic Hudson Park at Peekskill Landing set to begin this fall, Riverkeeper is looking to clean up a piece of the city's shoreline.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, volunteers will clear trash from the waterfront that connects Riverfront Green and Charles Point park. That area will offer a new walkway in the future, as part of the park project.

The goal is to have all the garbage cleaned up before construction begins.

Riverkeeper, an organization dedicated to protecting the Hudson and its tributaries, is working with city officials and Metro-North Railroad to round up volunteers for the effort. Metro-North oversees part of the property,

Information on Riverkeeper's website about the cleanup states that there are "countless plastic bottles that have apparently washed up over years from the river." It also notes the "gorgeous views of the southern gateway to the Hudson Highlands" that stretch of shoreline offers.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at Travis Cove on Louisa Street. The group will head to The Peekskill Brewery afterward. Registration is required. Click here to learn more.

Zero to Go, an organization that aims to keep "useable materials" local and "out of the waste stream," will be there too, for a pilot program that recycles and reuses as much trash as possible. The reason is two-fold: to limit the environmental impact incinerating trash, and to lessen the cost of trash hauling.
