Visions for Vacancies: Storefronts at Beach Shopping Center

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning; a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

We present a vacant space or property and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon that puts many people to sleep. What would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

We're hoping you'll weigh in on the vacancy at the west end of the Beach Shopping Center on Main Street in Peekskill. It's been empty for about a year, and a sign in the window indicates it's available for leasing.

The shopping center features an auto parts store, a barber shop, a CVS, a diner, a dollar store, a dry-cleaner, a Liberty Tax office, a liquor store, a pizza parlor, a RadioShack, a Sherwin Williams paint store, a Stop and Shop supermarket and more. There are at least two more vacant storefronts wedged into the main strip of shops, too.

So, Peekskill and Cortlandt folks, the question is: What would you like to see in the space?
