[UPDATE]Video Causes Uproar in Verplanck

A video shot five years ago that expressed anti-American sentiment has people calling for a boycott of a popular Verplanck deli and has led to a state police investigation.

UPDATE, 9:15 a.m.: Here's a link to another YouTube video. No anti-American language is used, but the video does show Morshed getting in a verbal dispute with at least one customer.

Ammar Morshed said he never thought a mistake made five years ago would come back to haunt him.

“I love America, it’s my second home,” Morshed, 20, said. “I live in the community. I went to school here. I would never say anything bad about this country.”

Morshed, whose family owns the Trails End Deli in Verplanck, is at the center of an uproar that has slowly spiraled through the community.

In a YouTube video taken five years ago, Morshed can be seen talking to two customers sitting in a car outside the deli. The customers use profane language and spout anti-American rhetoric during the clip.

Morshed said it was part of a series of videos that were taken to show friends and family members back home in Yemen.

“The people in the video aren’t even Arabic,” Morshed said. “One is Dominican and the other Puerto Rican. They’re the ones saying all that stuff. You can hear it on the video. I try to change the subject and get them to talk about music. I don’t know why they decided to put it out now. They’re just trying to start trouble.”

A link to the video can be found here. The video wasn’t attached to this story due to the explicit language used throughout the clip.

A Facebook group called “Boycott Anti-American Trails End Deli, Verplanck, NY”  has already sprung up and has more than 1,700 members. Although no threats of physical harm have been made to workers at the store, a number comments can be found from people expressing outrage

Cortlandt town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said she is aware of the situation, but declined to comment.

“It’s a police matter and the state police are looking into it and monitoring the situation,” Puglisi said. “It’s under investigation and I don’t want to say anything that could impact the investigation.”

Just like you, I was raised in the Town of Cortlandt as well. Not the point, thank god. I knew as a child and still know many people who grew up in Verplanck and yes, you are mostly all racist. Maybe not out in the open, but racist just the same. Your grandparents and parents were racist, you have racist tendencies, and unfortunately your children will probably follow in your footsteps. If i was you i would be more upset by your town being infested with the teenage heroin addicts around every corner.

Yummy, nothing beats the Margiottas, and those delicoius cookies!!!!
marie January 05, 2013 at 12:47 AM
Coach girl... since you're making so many assumptions... I'm gonna too. I'm gonna assume that 1971 is the year you were born... in that case you're over 40 years old. Start acting you're age and stop generalizing everyone because 20 something years ago you thought you knew someone from verplanck who was racist. This is not even the point of the boycott.
Nancy P January 05, 2013 at 12:56 AM
I grew up on "The Point" in the 70's. This NEVER Happened. Check the archives in the paper.

So Desire Maria now your for the boycott?? I thought you started a big fight on FB now? Are you a flip flopper??
Coach Girl 1971 January 05, 2013 at 02:46 AM
Well, Marie, your assumption is correct, but what the hell does that have to do with my comment??? I knew many people, not just one, so my opinion is based on fact. Dont talk to me like i dont understand the boycott, we all get it, maybe you dont. The fact remains to be true, that racism and bigotry is alive and well in the Point. And to be quite honest I am surprised there is actually an Arab owned business there in the first place. I am not condoning what was said, I am a proud American, and the grand daughter of a WW 2 vet, so dont get it twisted. But this country is built on free speech and the right to prosper, or does that only go for people born here??? Since your so smart you figure out......
Lindsey Curry January 05, 2013 at 03:17 AM
Lets get one thing straight here, This boycott is NOT happening due to anyone being racist!!! It is happening because, as a community, we deserve to be able to live in our town without worrying about potentially dangerous people causing harm! There are people/famlies of every race and religion living very happy and peacefully in verplanck! So you my friend need to get your so called facts straight
marie January 05, 2013 at 03:24 AM
It means you sound like a child. The right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, as with libel, slander, obscenity, sedition (including, for example inciting ethnic hatred). You should take a minute from insulting everyone on here and actually watch the video because then you would know that the "kid" Amarr was actually born here in America. I am pretty fucking smart thanks.

Coach Girl 1971 maybe you should replay it cause the one flapping is ugly face clearly says in the video "yeah that's right I'm part A-rab fuck the United States" and the boy recording starts laughing and proudly lets everyone know that his Nigga right there. Here's the whole video for you if you did not catch all that because you know the media always edits everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UowOSB2glYg&feature=player_embedded

you know what else coach girl this is not about the person being arabic it's about what was said and the humiliation of the 2 customers that went in that deli THIS past Christmas night, that did not know they were gonna be made as a joke on this kids facebook page.
Joe Curry January 05, 2013 at 04:33 AM
Hello Coach Girl 1971. I would like to comment on what you said. "And to be quite honest I am surprised there is actually an Arab owned business there in the first place." Do you know why you are surprised? It is because you don't have a clue as to what the people of Verplanck are about. By your own admission you "knew" (past tense) many people. The people of this small town, like the rest of America, have come a long way. Jimmy and his family were welcomed with open arms into this community. He has run a successful business for about 10 years. If "racism and bigotry is alive and well in the Point" then he would have been gone 9 years 11 months ago. People like you, looking from the outside in, are really putting down the people of Verplanck. And I don't just mean the white ones. You're making us ALL look bad! White, Black, Hispanic, EVERYONE! Stop making assumptions about me, my friends and my neighbors. This is not a race issue. It is an issue of safety and a matter of patriotism. And before you question my comment on this being a safety issue, this young man has posted videos of him and his friends with assault rifles and specials effects of bombs going off. He has also posted a picture of himself in a playground holding a handgun. That Deli is 1000 feet from my front door. My entire family lives in this town. I am concerned for all of our safety. My name is Joe Curry. I do not hide behind a fake name.
Coach Girl 1971 January 05, 2013 at 05:17 AM
I am not insulting everyone in "your" town, but clearly you are aware of what has been the history of it. I agree with your statement about it being a safety concern having someone who appears to have such hatred so close to your home. I havent seen all of the video's only what was published here, and i dont plan on giving him one more hit on Youtube. And please dont question whether or not I am a patriot. I love this country and all that it has offered me. Further more i dont need you to justify what i know about your town. So get down off your soap box. Just like you have your opinion i have mine, and the right to voice it, even if you dont agree. And as for Marie, no you take the time to watch the video again, like i said i wont give it another hit on Youtube. And as for the one sounding like a child, I am not the one on here cursing due to lack of vocabulary. Maybe you should take your own advice.
marie January 05, 2013 at 05:50 AM
Actually it was the one on the news that said he was born in America not YouTube. Like I said get your facts straight before you give your opinion. And it's not a lack of vocabulary I chose that word specifically for you. I was going to be respectful but then I decided you were an asshole and didn't deserve it. I chose that one too.
shakemdown January 05, 2013 at 06:51 AM
jessica you are right when you say that you are baffled by the hypocrisy, heck two black boys were hung a couple of years ago down by the dock, there is a bar there and they hung the black boys just for the simple reason that the boys were black and they didn't belong there and to this day no-one knows who did it and this happened like in the 80s
shakemdown January 05, 2013 at 07:19 AM
REXFORD let my enlighten you, first of all, all ricans like you stated are not illiterate, and to be honest you are part of the problem because you are stating that PEDRO and GONZALES should leave the country, i don't know where you went to school or if you ever did but they are puerto ricans and we are just as american as you are , i know , you were absent that day when that was taught .so in case you didn't know , you know now and by the way , if i remember correctly, the first three words of the constitution says "WE THE PEOPLE", it doesn't say we white people or we black people it saids "WE THE PEOPLE" so as i see it, it's everyones country, NOT BAD FOR A PUERTO RICAN RIGHT.
Julia B January 05, 2013 at 09:50 AM
"f America" is so amateur and sounds like rappers when they say "f the police". Do the police get upset and start boycotting rappers? These are just a bunch of kids getting their slang on and the guy being lynched by Verplankers is videotaping their dialogue. Come on. Dont you all have something better to do like ask Nancy to reduce your town taxes?
Julia B January 05, 2013 at 10:05 AM
Did you all ever asked why the other 2 kids were saying fuck the US. Maybe it was because they are upset about the senseless, waste of money, depression enhancing, American killing wars. Or they are Republicans and were upset that Barack America was voted The First Black President of the United States. I have heard some Verplankers called Barack the most disgraceful name. At the results of the last elections, some people said that they were "getting the f out if the US" and that "Americans are stupid". Now did anyone create a Facebook page telling people to boycott their landscaping and restaurant businesses? I take offense to being called stupid, even though I did not vite for Barack. Why this kid?????????? Why all the hate?????? And truly what does "fuck the US" really mean. If it means what I think it means, well I sure do not want that job.
Julia B January 05, 2013 at 10:12 AM
Really Frank. Is Verplankers now the most righteous town that people can't use the f word? Give me an effing break. Hypo effing cryts.
Julia B January 05, 2013 at 10:21 AM
Please tell Ammar and his family that Cortlandt is a little less racist than Verplank and there is a vacant deli on 202 just before the hospital. They would embrace them there. It is a bit more diverse and they would fit right in. Verplank is NOT a place for minorities.
Sweetpea January 05, 2013 at 02:33 PM
I don't think that JUST the residents of "Verplanck" are outraged. That was the title of the article. I do not live there, but after seeing the video, I was insulted at the anti-American comments that were thrown around.
joshua tanner January 05, 2013 at 03:26 PM
Julia B you're making excuses for hate while pretending to be against it. I am well aware of some of Verplanck's past and I also know its not the same. Now the people who were once the victims are now the biggest haters. These knuckleheads deserve no sympathy at all. To do so is to encourage the wrong in them. They are an embarrasment to their familes tbh.
KSB January 05, 2013 at 03:37 PM
Verplanck has always gotten a bad rap for racism. But that was years ago! Many of us "Pointers" are vital members of communities all over the world, serve(d) in the military and are proud of our roots. Based on recent events of terrorism, a video posted on YouTube like this, whether a "mistake" or not, is an ill conceived attack on the community and the people in it. What were the videographers thinking? The location of two nuclear power plants, proximity to NYC and West Point makes one wonder why they could think people would think this video was a mistake. Also, what about the pictures of the same subjects with large guns and clips of bullets? We had a kid in Massachusetts arrested shortly after the CT shootings for similar pictures. This is NOT racism, this is a reaction to something that was made to look like a threat, please keep the race card out of it.
Sweetpea January 05, 2013 at 05:11 PM
You go Joe! Although I chose to use an alias, I applaud your open, frank and intelligent comments here. I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Danny C January 06, 2013 at 04:43 AM
I support The boycott, the Curry's, and all the people affected by these foolish kids. (Well written Joe!) Hopefully cops are looking into any issues w/ weapons, public safety, etc. I feel that everyone in the video is guilty by association... The deli owner's son encouraged the other two kids by keeping the film rolling. (consciously or not) With that being said, I'm not a fan of his & won't patronize his family's deli. I don't think this family should come to Cortlandt Manor either... that's really not an option for the family & pretty silly to say. I actually feel bad for the family - their idiot son just ruined their lives. What tops it all off, (which was mentioned already) is the kid was unable to show remorse for what he did. (you do hear him being coached on what to say to the camera as an apology), that sickened me more than anything. Just an FYI: I'm AMERICAN, white in color, Italian, German, & Irish decent, i live in Cortlandt Manor, work in Peekskill in an extremely diverse environment. I'm AMERICAN & i stand by my people & my country for what i feel is right! God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!
shakemdown January 06, 2013 at 05:44 AM
if he displayed a gun at a childrens playground, why wasn't the police called
shakemdown January 06, 2013 at 05:54 AM
what i don't get is that this person has been seen with guns, assault rifles at a childrens playground and i don't see anything stating if anyone has contacted the police or anyone else about it.
Sashatree January 25, 2013 at 11:48 AM
No, neither one of the guys in the video are acquaintances of the deli family's son. They are Hispanics! I don't believe all this tempest in a teapot! This is stupid. The guy trash talking in the video is (as Patty V. above points out so eloquently) an impotent loser - a sad product of "public education" (if he even managed to graduate from high school.) And, I love the hypocrisy being shown here -- We worship our Constitution and the 1st Amendment -- yet we freak out and condemn people when they USE IT and say things "certain people don't like". Umm..that's called censorship and is why the 1st Amendment exists! Can't have it both ways people!!
Sashatree January 25, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Correcting my post (because you can't edit it yourself...grrrr) -- First sentence....what I meant to type was: No, neither one of the guys in the video are Mr. Morshed or family members of the Deli owners. They are two "friends" of Mr. Morshed, who, were acting stupid and talking trash.
