Education to Save Young Lives

A day dedicated to raising awareness and education about suicide, depression and alcohol and drug abuse that takes too many young lives.

On Sunday, Feb. 27 teens and adults attended workshops and seminars at the Yorktown Community Cultural Center to “help break the cycle of accidental death, funerals and regret,” that continues in Yorktown and Cortlandt. Between the two towns, there have been more than 20 teen deaths since 2005, due to alcohol abuse, depression, physical abuse, bullying, violence and accidents.

Lisa Tomeny, coordinator for Alliance for Safe Kids, said she wanted to have teens attend because they are the once interacting with their peers and could potentially save a friend’s life.

"We want to give them the skills to recognize the signs [of when someone is in trouble] and when they do, to know what to do," she said.
