Thousands of patriotic residents watch hour-long display of pride, history.
Ninety-year-old Laura McNeil stood up from her walker and placed her hand across her heart every time an American flag passed her along Division Street. Â The former Peekskill resident has returned each of the past seven years to the city to watch the 4th of July parade, just as she did every year while living here. Â Her four sons and daughter all served in the military covering all four branches of the service and this parade means a lot to her. Â
"Excuse me, I have to stand for this flag" as she rose and covered her heart with her hand again as one of the fire companies in the Peekskill Fire Department paraded past. Â "Now we can talk" she said after sitting back down. Â
McNeil was one of thousands of spectators waving flags and cheering while lining Highland Ave, Division Street, South Street and Hudson Ave. on a beautiful sunny day as marching bands, fire departments, city officials, little leaguers and social organizations paraded through the streets.
