Peace Pilgrimage on Rte 202

A peaceful anti-nuclear energy group is walking east on Route 202/35 today from Peekskill to Yorktown. Tomorrow they head to Brewster.

A peaceful anti-nuclear power group is walking east on Rte. 202 in Peekskill and Yorktown today as part of its Peace Pilgrimage for a Nuclear Free World, an effort to show solidarity to those who suffered from the tragedy in Japan and to support a nuclear-free future world.

The group started in Croton-on Hudson on Sunday and is making its way to Yorktown today, Brewster on Tuesday and Pawling on Wednesday. As of around noon today the group is about 20 people deep and they were near the Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Peekskill. They will continue walking northeast over the next two weeks until they reach their final destination, Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Vermont.

The group explains its purpose clearly in a press release and notes that the walk was initiated by Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order- Grafton Peace Pagoda: “We walk together in love and solidarity to pray for those affected by the tragedy in Japan and as a meditation upon a future world that is nuclear free. So that all living beings upon the earth may live in peace and safety.”

They plan to walk 206 miles, averaging about 15 to 18 miles a day and starting around 8:30 a.m. every morning. They invite supporters to join them for any length of time.

Be careful driving. The walkers don't have much space on the side of the road to themselves.
