Local Couples Expected to Apply for Historic Marriage Licenses Today

Cortlandt's Town Clerk said several couples have inquired about same-sex marriage and are expected to apply for their licenses today.

About three or four gay couples have called Cortlandt Town Hall to inquire about getting married in the last month since the Marriage Equality Act passed on June 24. Now that the Town Clerk JoAnn Dyckman expects to be issuing her first same-sex marriage licenses this morning.

“I am happy to see any two people who love each other together,” Dyckman said of the new law.

Dyckman confirmed that two appointments have been made for Supervisor Linda Puglisi to marry couples in August at official ceremonies as well.

Peekskill City Clerk Pamela Beach reported that only one inquiry had been made to her office regarding the new law, and didn’t expect anyone to be picking up licenses today.

Marriage licenses are issued and then the couple can meet with a judge who decides whether or not to waive the 24-hour legal wait period.

Ceremonies and celebrations are sure to range from quiet and private to loud and elaborate. Local catering halls are gearing up and happy for the new business.

“I love it,” said , of the Mansion at Colonial Terrace.

Drogy said a few female couples have met with him to discuss throwing their dream weddings in the next year.

“They want to have a real wedding,” he said. “I love it, as a business owner, as a catering place. I love it, it is a new form of business.”
