Hudson Avenue Between Smith and South Streets is Closed Due to Rain

Heavy rain caused a storm pipe to burst Friday, closing the section of Hudson until at least Monday.

Today’s torrential rains caused a storm line break under Hudson Avenue between South and Smith streets in Peekskill causing the pavement to buckle and pipes to become exposed. The Department of Public Works will fix the broken pipe tomorrow (they can’t address it while the rain continues) but the street will remained closed throughout the weekend, DPW Director Howard Wessells said.

Once an engineer surveys the area on Monday the rest of the road will be cleaned up and Wessells expects to then open it back up to traffic. While the area of Hudson Avenue is closed this weekend westbound traffic will have to turn onto Smith Street and eastbound traffic will have to turn onto South Street.

“Any time there is standing water on the road people should avoid it,” Wessells said.

During heavy rainfalls, problematic areas that would be better to avoid are intersections close to the river, including Welcher Avenue and Route 9 intersection, the Louisa Street and South Street intersection and Central Avenue and Water Street intersection.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 9 p.m. Friday and a flash flood watch until 2 a.m. Saturday. The rain should subside overnight and Saturday should be mostly sunny with a high near 86.
