Flu Vaccine Scarce in Villages

There are no flu vaccines currently available at the major drug stores in Tarrytown.

Citizens scared by the national news of a nasty flu epidemic have been racing to find their flu shots, with little luck locally.

The pharmacist at Tarrytown’s Walgreens reports that the phone is ringing off the hook with people on the hunt for a place to get their vaccines.

Neither of the two CVSes in Tarrytown nor the Walgreens has the shot available now. Nor would most any doctor, the Walgreens pharmacist who only gave his name as Kevin, said.

“They are releasing it in small quantities, and when we had some people were lining up from all over the county,” he said.

No pharmacist at the three local chains could speculate when they would get more.

“Were waiting on them,” the Walgreens pharmacist said.

The word from the Westchester County Health Department is the vaccine is out there.

"We are currently surveying pharmacies to determine vaccine availability," said Caren Halbfinger. "Individual locations may have used up their supply, but the state assures us there is sufficient supply available from manufacturers. We also have links on our website where residents can find additional sources to call - both medical offices and pharmacies - and sources of vaccine for doctors and pharmacists who need additional supplies."

On Flu.gov you can plug your zip code to get a map of flu shot providers in your area, but call first to check availability and you may have to go further than 10591.

Let's just make the flu vaccine mandatory for everyone. This would be fully in keeping with the current administration.

This just in: County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced today that the Westchester County Department of Health will offer free flu shots to residents on Thursday, Jan. 24 , from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. “With so much demand for the flu shot right now, some doctors and pharmacists are having a hard time keeping up ,” Astorino said. “By offering free flu shots, we aim to help those residents who have not yet gotten vaccinated.’’ The county has 1,000 doses which can be given to adults and children ages 9 and up. Residents are strongly encouraged to register in advance for the flu clinic at www.health. ny.gov/Go2Clinic.
