Exploring Issues: Peekskill's 'Exclamation Point'

Does the turret still represent an "exclamation point" announcing the downtown center?

The turret, or "onion dome," on the building located at 1 North Division Street in Peekskill stands out as one of the most unique features of the city.

According to the City of Peekskill's historic walking tour map, the turret attached to the corner brick building has been there since 1905 and is purely decorative.

"It is a kind of exclamation point announcing the downtown center," the guide explains.

The building was originally the Empire House hotel in 1885 and was then identified as the Kentora Hotel in 1907.

“'Kentora' was coined from the owner’s names, Clune and Torpy. Guest rooms were upstairs, and a saloon was downstairs. It was home to the Clinton Drug Store from about 1910 to the 1960s. The street level business has been occupied by Submarine Galley for many years."

Today, the new is located on the bottom level and the top two floors house apartments, currently occupied.

Do you think the turret still represents an "exclamation point" for the City of Peekskill?
