Buchanan Man Honored for Saving Cardiac Arrest Victim's Life with CPR

Robert Gioia was honored by the Cortlandt Community Volunteers Ambulance Corps earlier this month after he used CPR to save a man's life in March.

Robert Gioia’s CPR training was put to good use last month when he helped a keep one of his neighbors stabilized until paramedics arrived at the scene.

The Cortlandt Volunteer Ambulance Corpshonored Gioia earlier this month during its monthly meeting.

The patient was suffering from sudden cardiac arrest when Gioia went to his aid and administered CPR until the Ambulance Corps and Cortlandt Regional Paramedics arrived at the scene. Emergency officials were able to transport the patient to a hospital where he received advanced medical treatment and was able to recover.

The day before the incident, Gioia was one of several baseball coaches who worked with Cortlandt EMS to renew their CPR and first aid certification.

Gioia is being honored as the civilian of the year during the Westchester Regional EMS Council’s 40th annual awards ceremony in May.

Cortlandt EMS encourages all everyone to become efficient in compression only CPR and will provdie CPR and first aid training to all interested community members.

The Cortlandt Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps provides emergency, pre-hospital patient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week to Cortlandt Ambulance District 1 and mutual aid assistance to neighboring districts.

The Ambulance Corps also provides standby ambulance service at community events and helps prepares the community for emergency health situations through free CPR and first aid training, its defibrillator lend program and other initiatives.
