41st Annual Rotary Horse Show and Country Fair: A weekend of riding, vendors, music and more

When/Where:  Blue Mountain Reservation, Peekskill; Saturday, Sept. 24, 8am-5pm & Sunday,Sept. 25, 8a.m.-5p.m.

Why Go: Brought to you by the Peekskill Rotary, the 41st Annual Rotary Horse Show will be an event you won’t want to miss. Not only will there be horses, but you can also expect food and craft vendors, pony and wagon rides, face painting and bouncy castles too. The show’s riding styles will be varied by day, featuring western and therapeutic riding on Saturday and English riding on Sunday.

As a new addition to this year’s event there will also be a battle of the bands taking place on Sunday. There will be a shuttle running between the and the horse show Saturday on afternoon.

One Act Plays : Five one-act plays presented by the Hand-to-Mouth Players

When/Where: Hendrick Hudson Library, Montrose; Friday-Sunday: Fri., Sept. 23, 8pm, Sat., Sept.24, 8pm & Sun., Sept. 25, 2pm

Why Go: Under the artistic direction of Anne Rodgers Pearl and Gary Simon, the local community theatre company Hand-to-Mouth Players present their 20th Annual Award Winning Playwright/Director's Workshop.The group will be putting on five original one-act plays which will range from comedies to dramas. Three of the plays were written by local authors, Stewart Hanges, Joy Rose and Jeffery Virgo, and two of the plays were written by California playwrights Michael Wolfson and Karen Hartline.

United Kickoff Event: A fundraising event for the non-profit organization, Young Yorktown Advocates

When/Where:  Jack DeVito Memorial Park, Yorktown Heights; Saturday, Sept. 24, noon-4pm

Why Go: Come out to support the youth organization, Young Yorktown Advocates,  which has teamed up with To Write Love on Her Arms, Inc to provide “education, support, and awareness”to the issues facing the youth of the community, ages 14-25,  that have been affected by depression, addiction, bullying, self-destruction and other high risk behaviors. A speakerfrom TWLOHA will be present at the event, and there will be live music, vendors, and food,in what promises to be a day of “inspiration & fun.”

Celebrate the 80's: The 3rd Annual Benefit Honoring Patrick Casabona, Jr.

When/Where: The Mansion at Colonial Terrace, Cortlandt Manor; Saturday, Sept. 24, 7-11:30pm

Why Go: Come flashback to the 80’s in this event dedicated to the memory of former Somers High School student Patrick Casabona, Jr. The evening will included dinner, dancing, raffles and a silent auction to benefit the Patrick Casabona, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Why Go: Going green is all the rage, and now you can be a part of the movement too. Bring your own clean, reusable, portable items such as books, media, toys, housewares, sports equipment, pet supplies, and jewelry to swap with others, or simply come and see what’s free to take. Also at the event will be almost 20 exhibitors present to share information about green living and discuss topics such as recycling, waste reduction, renewable energy, healthy living and much more.

Open Hart Poetry: Workshop & Reading /Mysterious Ladies: Weekend events at The John C. Hart Library

When/Where: John C. Hart Library, Shrub Oak, Saturday, Sept. 24, 10am & Sunday, Sept. 25,2pm

Why Go: Spend a weekend enjoying all that the John C. Hart Library has to offer. Cami Zinzi & Catherine Wald will be hosting the Open Hart Poetry Workshop starting at 10am on Saturday. If you’ve ever wanted to learn the ins and outs of poetic verse, now is your chance. Registration is limited to eight participants, so please call ahead to reserve your space. This workshop will be followed at noon by a poetry reading that is open to all. On Sunday M&M Productions Acting Company, Inc. will be presenting Mysterious Ladies, two one act plays including the drama, Ms.Cage, by Nancy Barr, and Specter, a thriller by Don Nigro. No registration is required for Sunday’s event.

Redhawk Native American Arts Council Pow Wow: The annual Pow Wow returns to FDR Park to celebrate Native American culture

When/Where:  Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, Yorktown Heights; Saturday, Sept. 24, 11am-7pm & Sunday,Sept. 25, 11am-7pm

Why Go: The largest Native American gathering in the Lower Hudson Valley returns to FDR Park for another year of fun. At the Pow Wow you’ll enjoy over 1,000 Native American, artists, performers and educators from across the Americas. You will also get a chance to experience Native American songs, dancing, drumming, food, art and crafts. This event is rain or shine.

: A fun day of events for the entire family

When/Where:  Village of Buchanan (Pavilion on Westchester Avenue), Buchanan; Saturday, Sept.24, 11am-4pm

Why Go: Celebrate the day with those you love the most. At this year’s Family Fun Day you can look forward to food, vendors, entertainment, activities, and a bouncy house for the kids to play on. To keep the excitement going, there will be a special Birds of Prey show at noon that you won’t want to miss, and the Life Net of NY Helicopter will make an appearance at 3pm.

Bear Mountain Oktoberfest: Authentic German food and beer at Bear Mountain State Park

When/Where: 55 Hessian Drive, Bear Mountain; Saturday,Sept. 24 & Sunday, Sept. 25, noon-6pm

Why Go: Celebrate this annual local favorite Oktoberfest with some authentic German food and beer. Along with the ales and schnitzel this event will also feature live entertainment and arts and crafts. While at the park you cantake a relaxing boat ride around Hessian Lake, enjoy a stroll throughout the state park, or take the kids on the Merry Go Round. Saturday Crafts at the Field: Children’s arts and crafts at the Peekskill Field Library

Where/When: Peekskill Field Library, Peekskill;Saturday, Sept. 24, 11am-noon

Why go: Grab the glitter and glue sticks because it’s time to get creative at Peekskill’s Field Library. Join staff and other families for fun times and craft projects. The program is suited for children ages 3 and up, with older children welcome aswell. All kids should bring an adult to help with their crafting.
