Yorktown Leos Use Bedpans to Raise $2,300 for Hudson Valley Hospital Center

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (May 22, 2013) – Dressed in hospital gowns and carrying bedpans, area students from the Yorktown Leos Club raised $2,3000 for Hudson Valley Hospital Center this past weekend trolling for cash along Route 6.

The enterprising young fundraisers from Yorktown, Walter Panas and Lakeland High Schools, as well as Copper Beech and Mildred Strang Middle Schools raised the money in front of the Cortlandt Town Center on Saturday in less than five hours.

Yorktown Leos adviser Al Avitable said that he got the idea for collecting money in the bed pans from a fundraiser the Leos did last year for the local 911 memorial using fireman’s boots.  “Given that we’re raising money for Hudson Valley Hospital, I thought it would be more appropriate – and funny – to use bedpans,’’ he said.

Avitable said that the Lions youth group raised $4,500 for Support Connection, a support group for breast and ovarian cancer, with a concert earlier in May. Last year the Leos raised more than $20,000 for various causes, he said.

According to Leos president Joey Cirone, members who participated in the drive were: Joey Cirone (President and Senior at Yorktown High School); Brittany Figueroa (VP and Senior at YHS); Paul Stern (VP and Senior at YHS); Roger Iyengar (Webmaster Senior at Ardsley HS); Jordan Kaplan (Senior at YHS); Jon Idrovo (Junior at YHS); Emma Fahey (Junior at YHS); Kelly Flannery (Junior Lakeland); Andrew Flannery (Junior Lakeland); Nick Cirone (Junior YHS); Michelle Reda (Junior YHS); Justin Cohen (Sophomore YHS); Alexa Friedman (Junior Panas HS); Meghan McGowen (Past President College of the Holy Cross); Amanda Arena (Junior Somers HS); Sebastian Rivera (Sophomore YHS); Max Stern (Sophomore YHS); Donna Marie (Sophomore Lakeland HS);  Daniela Grajeda (Copper Beach 8th Grade); Roger Cirone (6th Grade Mildred E Strang Middle School)
