Hendrick Hudson High School Choral and Instrumental Groups to Perform Carmina Burana and Other Works at Yorktown Stage

On Monday March 3, at 7:30 p.m., the Hendrick Hudson School District’s award-winning choral and instrumental groups will perform Carol Orff’s spectacular work, Carmina Burana, at the Yorktown Stage in Yorktown Heights. All are welcome to come and enjoy this exciting evening of great music.

Featuring the Hendrick Hudson Wind Ensemble and Concert Band led by Band Director Benjamin Acrish and the choral group the Harmonizers led by Choral Director Erica Denler, the performance of this large scale multi-movement work will run about 30 minutes.

Hendrick Hudson’s other two choral groups, the Treblemakers and the Concert Choir, will also be performing. In addition to Carmina Burana, the concert will feature works by composer Samuel R. Hazo and others that will highlight the individual bands and choruses separately.

Carmina Burana has been featured in numerous Hollywood movie scores and many in the audience will find it instantly recognizable from the first few notes. It is rarely performed at the high school level due to the level of difficulty of the music. Mr. Acrish commented, “We’re really looking forward to performing such a challenging and rewarding work.”

Hendrick Hudson’s music program is clearly up for the challenge. The roster of performers includes four NYSSMA All-State Music Festival participants, twelve NYSSMA Area All-State participants, and one NYSSMA All-County participant. Also, three Hendrick Hudson students were selected to participate in the ACDA High School Honor Choir for a performance at the ACDA Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore, Maryland this February 5-8. Auditions for this prestigious choir took place all up and down the east coast. In addition, Hendrick Hudson’s individual band and choral groups participated in an adjudicated music competition in Massachusetts in May 2013 and took home top awards, including several first-place distinctions, one second-place distinction, an outstanding soloist award and the Esprit de Corps award, given to the school that best demonstrated decorum, spirit, cooperation and talent.

Admission is free, although donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. There will be a 50/50 raffle to benefit PCOM, the Parents’ Committee on Music, a group of Hendrick Hudson parent volunteers whose goal is to raise funds to enhance the district’s music programs.
