Many thanks to the Putnam Valley Fire Department who visited Once Upon A Time Preschool/Daycare in Putnam Valley. It was a great educational opportunity for the children as they were able to sit in the fire truck, wear the equipment and be taught how to "stop, drop and roll." It cannot be stressed enough, the importance of having very young children meet and spend time with these amazing individuals who risk their lives for us on a daily basis. For young ones, meeting the emergency workers in an informal setting allows for less fear and stress should there ever be a true incident whereby they come in contact with one another. It is Fire Prevention month so everyone is being reminded to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and also to make sure that you and your family have an evacuation plan in the case of an emergency.

A recent study actually shows that the highest homicide rates are in the states with the fewest gun controls. States like Louisiana, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alaska just to name a few.
Sure, there are fewer homicides in Alaska than in New York, but adjusted for population, the per-ca-pita homicide rate is significantly lower in New York.
