Senate Passes Legislation to Help Disabled Veterans

Bill Would Provide a Preference in State Contracts for Disabled Veterans

The following is a press release from Senator Greg Ball's Office: The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.2423), sponsored by Senator Gregory R. Ball (R-C, Pawling), that would give greater access to state contracts to veterans who were disabled during their service. This bill would codify for New York an identical and highly successful program adopted for federal contracting.  Given the increase in the number of veterans and disabled veterans due to recent overseas conflicts, this bill would provide a small measure of recognition that this group of selfless men and women deserve. “We must strengthen opportunities in state contracting for service-disabled veteran owned small businesses,” said Senator Greg Ball who currently …

Westchester Seniors Urged To Take 'Economic Security' Survey

Findings will determine if their incomes meet their basic needs.

Westchester County residents age 60 and older who have not yet taken the county survey to learn if their incomes cover their basic needs without public or private subsidies are encouraged to do so at this time.  “We need the data from this survey to have a better picture of where we can put our limited dollars to best impact seniors,” said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino.  “Don’t delay taking part.” The survey is sponsored by the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and the county’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) in conjunction with its Livable Communities initiative. Cuomo Proposes Ways to Better Protect Vulnerable New Yorkers

The legislation will create a Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.

The state must protect the most vulnerable among us. That was the point Gov. Andrew Cuomo made Thursday at the College of New Rochelle. He presented legislation at a press conference that would strengthen standards and practices for protecting people with special needs and disabilities. "I will not allow a patient in the care of this state to be abused. Period," Cuomo said to applause from the audience assembled in Maura Hall. The proposed legislation will create a Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, which will have a special prosecutor and inspector general. They will investigate reports of abuse and neglect, eventually prosecuting allegations that rise to the level of a crime. Cuomo said that for the 17 months…

Another reason I'm proud to have voted for Andrew Cuomo. It's taken 40 years from the expose at Willowbrook but we now have a governor willing to expend political capital to defend, arguably, the most powerless New Yorkers.   more ›

Cuomo: Tappan Zee Bridge Needs to Be Replaced 'Now'

The governor spoke of safety concerns but did not elaborate on financing the construction.

Citing safety concerns and a "pressing need,"  Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday the Tappan Zee Bridge will be replaced soon. "When it gets right down to it, we have to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge," he said. "It has to be done now." The governor was at the College of New Rochelle to announce a proposal to form a justice center to prevent, investigate and prosecute abuse of special-needs New Yorkers. During a brief press conference after his speech, Cuomo was asked about financing for the new bridge. He said there are no concrete plans for paying for the new bridge, adding that the state doesn't yet know how much it will cost. Cuomo also said there had been no discussion of financing the bridge by raising tolls. In April, the state …

Henry, your statement "It is ultimately a finite supply and thus must ultimately be replaced. It won't be replaced by any one resource." is partially true. It seems that you must get that message to President Obama and Mr. Stephen Chu. They seem to think that raising the fuel prices to $8/gal is the answer to all our energy problems. We live in a mobile society and there is NO replacement fuel in…   more ›

Cuomo 'Proud' of Obama's Support for Gay Marriage

The governor was speaking at a press conference in New Rochelle.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is proud of President Barack Obama's voiced support for marriage equality. Speaking after a press conference Thursday at the College of New Rochelle, the first-term Democratic governor said he really believed the president's views on the issue changed over time, rather than just finally admitting the truth. During an interview recorded Wednesday for ABC News, Obama told Robin Roberts that gays and lesbians should have access to the same civil rights as heterosexual couples.  "Many people evolved on this issue," Cuomo said. "If you posed the same question 20 years ago to people in this state—Do you think there should be marriage equality?—my guess is overwhelming the answer would have been no." For the governor today…

"they were stepping forward to serve their country." Maybe the Roosevelts but not Cuomo. You have to be kidding. If you believe that he is doing it for his country I need some of what you are taking. Politics is all about money, power,me and history .. me being the politician. The last one I am sure of did it for his country was the first one.   more ›

State Senate Candidate Wagner Criticizes Sen. Ball's Spending on Mailers

Calling the senator’s mailers wasteful and hypocritical, Sen. Ball’s challenger calls for mailer reform.

Glossy mailers featuring Sen. Greg Ball with his dog should not be paid for by taxpayer dollars, said Sen. Ball’s District 40 challenger Justin Wagner today during a press conference at his Peekskill headquarters. Wagner also released a YouTube video featuring Ball’s former opponent, Steve Katz, that attacks Ball for his spending on mailers promoting Ball’s work to repeal the MTA payroll tax. According to Wagner, who is a Croton resident and Democratic Party candidate, Ball has spent more money on mailers than any other Hudson Valley Senator and is the third highest spender on mailers in the State Senate.  “In the period from April until September 2011, Senator Ball spent $108,903 of taxpayer funds on bulk postage mailers,” Wagner said. “…

Frank's totally on the mark here. Harry Reid is to Putnam County what a fish is to a bicycle. Ball must continue the anti-immigration agenda that got him elected (cause he's done so much to stop it!) for the sake of mankind. God Bless only us.   more ›

Obama: I Support Same-Sex Marriage [POLL]

President Obama becomes first active commander-in-chief to champion gay marriage

In a historic moment Wednesday afternoon, President Barack Obama voiced support for same-sex marriage, becoming the first sitting commander-in-chief to do so. Over the past few years, Obama had said his views on the issue were "evolving," but never expressed open support—just the belief that gays and lesbians should have access to the same civil rights as married couples. But today—on the heels of a state ammendment in North Carolina that outlaws gay marriage—Obama spoke in support of same-sex marriage with ABC News. (Watch the clip here.) "I've just concluded that for me personally it is important to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married," he said. Obama noted staff members and soldiers he knows …
