Sheila Guida and Marie Turner Honored for their Volunteerism

Sheila Guida and Marie Turner have dedicated their time and themselves to various causes in the for years, and never asked for recognition. But, Cortlandt officials noticed and when Senator Greg Ball asked municipalities to nominate “women of distrinction” for his Hall of Fame by that name, Cortlandt nominated Guida and Turner.

Both women were honored at last night’s town board meeting. They received proclamations from the Town Board and the state of New York and Ball’s Chief of Staff Jim Coleman and Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi thanked them for their selfless service and dedication.

“This came to me as a complete surprise. You volunteer because you want to do it and you figure no one is paying attention you just do what you love doing,” Guida said at the board meeting.

Guida and Turner have both lived in Cortlandt throughout their lives and serve on many boards, including that of the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Auxiliary.

Guida  has also served as an officer of the Feeny Park Boys Club, organizing many fundraisers to support the club and furnish equipment. In addition, she is the chairperson of the Nor-Cort Seniors Club “Cookies for Vets” collection and the co-chair of “Lap Robes for Vets” program. Guida was the 2008 inductee into the Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame.

Turner is also on the Board of Directors of the , a member of the St. Lukes Lutheran Church choir, a member of the Nor-Cort Seniors Club, maintains the Petal Garden as a member of the Peekskill-Cortlandt Garden club and handles fundraising for the 9/11 Remembrance Memorial Task Force.

“I thank everyone for this honor It is my pleasure to volunteer,” Turner said.

Last weekheir woman of distinction, Virginia Rederer. The three women, along with Peekskill’s nominated Founding Mothers of Peekskill Area Health Center - Jeannette Phillips, Willie Mae Jackson, Mary Woods and Pearl Woods (Deceased)-will be formally inducted into the Women of Distinction Hall of Fame during a ceremony to be held on March 30 at Putnam County Emergency Services Center.
