Mom's Great Escape: Lessons on Wine

A wine workshop at Suburban Wines & Spirits will make you a more sophisticated wine taster.

I admit it, I’m far from being a wine connoisseur. Like so many other moms, I occasionally enjoy a glass of wine -- but I don’t know to discern the flavor by utilizing all of my senses, or find the perfect food to pair with the kind of wine I’m drinking. How does a busy mom even begin to learn this kind of thing?

Well, she could take a trip to a world of wine (make that in Yorktown) for a couple of hours.

The newly renovated wine shop, which is also the largest in Yorktown, offers occasional wine workshops called Wine Basics 101. Those who attend the two hour-long seminars learn how to choose wines, pair wines with popular foods, build their own wine cellars, and more. These workshops cost $30 when paid in advance. The next one is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9.

If you’re not interested in a seminar, Suburban Wines also hosts themed wine tastings every Saturday from 12 p.m.- 5 p.m.

For example, Southwest France is the theme on Saturday, March 12. Customers can taste wines from Bergerac, Cahors, Gaillac, Buzet, and more. And as a bonus, you get 20 percent off any wine that is sampled during the tasting.
