Community Organizations Donate Funds for Sensory Gym at FGL Elementary

Hendrick Hudson Board of Education accepted donations from the Cortlandt Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the CVS Foundation for the sensory gym at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School.

Cortlandt Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the CVS Foundation donated funds to help build the sensory gym at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School, the Hendrick Hudson Board of Education announced at last week’s meeting.

The donations were a product of the district’s freshly established special education grant writing team, which is headed by Caroline Almeida, Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services.

The sensory gym will bring items and equipment that will further involved children in physical activity.

Students can look forward to suspended swings, rolling scooters, trampolines, balance beams, and yoga balls, as well as other equipment built for climbing and jumping. Mats will also be installed in the gym.

The goal of the improvements is “to help students with physical disabilities build strength, increase range of motion, and improve gross motor and coordination skills,” according to the school district.

Additionally the same equipment is known to be “used by occupational therapists for students with sensory processing disabilities to provide proprioceptive and vestibular input that can help students respond appropriately to sensory input,” and has shown to lead to an increase in focus when students return to their classrooms.
